Spike for Fish
Nailed a good snapper on Sunday and had a fair bit of trouble releasing because didn't have the right gear to release the air from bladder. Ended up using a thin blade of fillet knife - fish swam away strongly. Seriously considering a large hyperdermic needle for the job - it's sterile until opened and easily available. Is there special spikes made for such purposes. What is used generally????

The better needle to use is an IV cather. Same as a hyperdermic needle but larger and longer.

G'day Dave
We use a 16 guage syringe for the job, works well on most fish.
Use the plunger to keep the needle clean
Should be able to get them from a chemist.

Sounds like a good one, where do you get catheter needles from?

Re: Spike for Fish
We use 20 gauge needles with a 100ml syringe. We get them for needling sick cows but you should be able to get them from a Vet.
Cheers
