Depends what ya chasing mate, pretty quite land based unless you want to put in the hard yards. Try flicking some plastics while patrolling the marlin jetty at dusk, might pick yaself up a queenie or some small trevors. Pretty hard going though, just enjoy the scenery and reef.

Get on a charter will be worth the trip. The marlin should be working out there at the moment and the spaniards should also be coming on strong.

you can drive to the mouth of the Barron river - get the occassional fish off the bank there - usual river mouth stuff

Palm cove jetty is a popular spot - some big fish caught there very occasionally - few and far between though i believe unless you put in a lot of time - May have some mackeral hanging around though at the moment.

the rockwalls at the yorkey's knob boat club marina also hold some nice fish at times too.

just don't ask how many quality fish i've caught landbased here in cairns ( one of the day charters to the reef for $150 odd would be pretty good value )

Palm Cove and the mouth of the Barron are probably the best winter spots. The main species at this time of year are mackerel, grunter, flathead and whiting. You really need calm weather and clean water around pc pier for the macks. The other species are best targetted at the Barron and don't require good conditions to catch, just some fresh baits and light tackle.
