went out to spot X today and got to see a lot of whales go by. there was one pod that came very close to the end of the wall where i was but by the time i remembered i had my camera and go my line in they had moved off a bit still got a great show and a couple not so great photos:
this pic was taken with the 3X digital zoom.....he gave me a wave to say Gidday I missed a few shots of them coming clear of the water, wish i had my old nikon with 300mm zoom. maybe one day I will get a Nikon D100 for such moments.

It is great when you see such an event so close to shore.
I was fishing on the Tweed wall a couple of months ago and there were so many whales and dolphins in the water. They were in close. As the fish were not on the chew, I packed the fishing gear away and watched the show instead.
