Kingtin - as you say - anyone who disconnects the safety chain to reverse down/drive up the ramp is simply asking for trouble. I watched a bloke lose his boat by simply accelerating a touch because the ramp was slippery. Wheels gained a bit of traction and off went the boat. He wasn't speeding or being reckless - just accelerated pretty much as normal. But he did not have the safety chain on - silly man.

You have spoken well and wisely Kev. At no stage reading this thread did I feel you were grandstanding or chest thumping. 'Safety' is the key word, and 'safety' chain is the object. Anyone promoting 'safety' would surely have to agree to leave the chain on until the boat is in the drink. This new guy to the site will learn to respect yours, and others opinions, I am sure.
I think he may be suffering from a little 'keyboard rage'!

    Cheers

and a personal assualt on me by Mikos

    well done

i respect opion...i do not respect arguement over issues that are not directly related to the topic..my original post was one of sfatey and not leaving the boat unhooked...and that hook should be able to hold the Boat correctly in any situation

    simple

and what of my opinion...i am not allowed one?....until i serve an apprentiship?

keyboard rage is not the issue
and to be clearly defined as an idiot by others is disrepectul and rude.

to assume someone has taken too many hits in the head....is down right deserving of an apology

forgive me for suggesting what someone else may have...or may not have inferred

i for one...dont know how...you would have to brake sharply on a boat ramp.(speeding?)..unless its to release the boat off the trailer without the winch connected...
i also dont understand how....you would have a major piece of connecting material...ie a boat winch clip..that would disconnect under the weight of the boat...(bad bad bad idea)

    Re: boat ramp rage

I feel that some member seem to join just to create friction, come and go.
There seems to be a few. I also leave my safety chain on until my boat is at the point where I put the motor down and start it. I also start my motor before taking it off the trailer. I wont quote this or that but I will say that Kev makes sense to me

Thanks for the support lads but I'd prefer you just leave it be. The group deserves better than being subjected to petty quibbles although I think that I've learned a great deal from it.

I have pm'd Thump in the hope that clarification may come regarding him questioning my honesty/integrity with regards to me and my deckies training with the RM's. Apart from that, I have no other issue. Once again, thanks for the support.

    cheers

    Re: boat ramp rage

Well Kingtin, you made someone more enlightened - me. I had been guilty of undoing the safety shackle and reversing down the ramp. I thought because it was just a 4.5m tinnie, that Id be OK.

I now see the risk I was taking, and will change my ways. I assume that was your whole point, that someone might not have considered the risk, and that you might actually help someone learn something before its too late.

The kid running behind the trailer issue really woke me up. It could happen to anyone. As all good soldiers and seaman know - "always expect the unexpected".

    thanks
    Andrew
