Thread: Another boat swamped in the Bay HOW?

Re: Another boat swamped in the Bay HOW?

A substantial sort of boat burries its nose and turns turtle in repetitively calm water. Some may say the matter is not worth pursuing. I tend to think the issue should be talked about. I do believe this sort of incident could be repeated if people are not made aware of how hulls might behave in certain circumstances. Its nice to show respect for the victims of this particular incident, but that shouldn't stifle discussion that could prevent others from coming to the same fate.

I have not said that we should discontinue this discussion, nor leave out any of the events leading up to, during or after the misshap.
Dont get me wrong, what I am saying is that I dont think that the real answer will ever be determined, certainly not enough to apportion blame to those on the boat.
The last thing I want is to strifle this thread, by all means, offer your opinions, suppositions, instances and suggestions, but I do think that any suggestions offered be considered as a generalisation as opposed to theorys of the cause of them overturning because their are simply to many variables....
    Just my opinion once again....

Good Night, got to get up at 4.30am and head to work.

Re: Another boat swamped in the Bay HOW?

    Panda,
Mate I started the thread with the thoughts of how this could happen on such a calm night as many have already stated the thread in relation to the Accident is pretty much over everything has been mentioned through-out the thread if you care to read back over all the posts. Including the one's by Kazza you will see that most of the things brought to light have had some what of answers and I do not think as stated by others that we will ever know the real truth to everything but one never does. and as everyone else has said I have leant so much personally myself in relation to different things and now maybe some might think more about the safety gear and when to/not to use it hence in this case if they had life jackets on whilst motoring it would of saved them a little grief however I am not blaming them for it has just open all our eyes to the dangers once again of the sea and hopefully by this thread some of us have been better educated by others experiences. Whether they are good or bad.

Comments like one's from Kev about going through Drills with your kid's to be totally honest I had not even thought of that my girl is only 8 months but still when she is a little bit older I will be doing that for sure I mean SH*t if it saves one life it is all worth it and I want my children and also myself as educated as possible.

To everyone who has posted on this thread I thank you good or bad I think we all have got a lot out of it

    Cheers

Re: Another boat swamped in the Bay HOW?

    Hi everyone
Can i ask with all that has been posted, could the combination of Broaching, Weight disspersment, Bimin and a mix of trim add to the outcom of this freak accident.
How high are the sides of a 4.3 bfin and how far does the floor come up. Would this be a factor with stability and centre of gravity.
i have had my 4.7 cuddy breech in a following sea (is that the correct explaination) pushes the crew to one side and fesls like she could be flipped. (trim problem with a stingray foil maybe)
Again just trying to undertsand the cause and maybe prevention.
    Best wishes to all involved

ps i will involve the family in more saftey drilling as well. thanks kev

Re: Another boat swamped in the Bay HOW?

the bimini top could definitely have contributed to it due to high centre of gravity and catching a bit of wind

Or maybe it was just a simple case of an attempted turn made too late.

Kazza01, Just wondering if Stephen was selling a 12ft tinny 3-4 months ago. I think I met him & his girlfriend down at Birkdale (I think). May not be the same person, but person did mention his health problems and his inability to fish in the sun. Seemed a real nice guy. Didn't buy his boat as it was too small but hoped he found a buyer at the price he wanted.

This fellow I met was an experienced fisherman/boatie and new his stuff. I wish him well for the future.

    Hi James_R
Yes that was Stephen. He managed to sell his old tinny to help finance this new boat. Thanks for your wishes and will pass them on.
    Cheers Karen
