Another boat swamped in the Bay HOW?

I was viewing the news this evening to see yet another boat was swamped by a side wave about 2km of Wellington point.( 7pm last night) No offence to the bloke or his misses who swam/floated to shore on/with the fuel tank from there boat, But how on earth would one swamp there boat last night, I was out round peel last night amongst a few other fellow Ausfishers who were dispersed around the bay and it was quite a nice night on the bay and stuff all chop if any.

It was good to see they both made it to shore saftley with out any real harm and with out being munched.

It seems the bay is claiming more and more boats.

Maybe some need to be a little more careful on the water

Capsized couple battle odds

CLINGING to a small plastic fuel tank, a 20-year-old woman swam up to two kilometres pulling her sick boyfriend to safety after their boat capsized in Moreton Bay.

Danielle Pirc made the two-hour swim last night after a gust of wind capsized her boyfriend Stephen Butler's 3.4m fishing boat near Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island, east of Brisbane, where sharks killed Sarah Whiley last Saturday.
"It was pretty hard, but I just saw Wellington Point getting closer, and I saw the headlights of cars getting closer with every stroke I took. I just wanted to get there, to the lights," she said.

Mr Butler, 23, who is recovering after a battle with leukaemia, only recently bought the boat.

He said the fishing trip - Ms Pirc's first in the boat - ended around 6.45pm (AEST) when the vessel capsized.

Unable to retrieve their safety vests, trapped in the overturned vessel, the couple clambered on top of the overturned boat and waited for around 15 minutes.

But with night approaching and after failing to raise the attention of fishing boats in the area, Ms Pirc took matters into her own hands.
"Danielle swam to get the fuel tank, which by that point had floated about 50m ... she got the fuel tank and brought it back to me and we started swimming," said Mr Butler.

The couple believe leaking petrol from the fuel tank - which also burnt them - may have repelled any sharks in the area.

"I swam with my back to the water, looking at the moon. If (a shark) was going to come, I didn't want to see it coming," said Mr Butler.

Mr Butler said his boat has been retrieved and he intends to have his "pride and joy" repaired.

Couple swim to shore after boat sinks

Water police say a couple whose dinghy overturned last night in Moreton Bay, off Brisbane, were lucky to swim back to shore.

A 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman clung to a petrol tank for two hours after their small boat was swamped by a large wave off Wellington Point.

Acting Superintendent Shane Chelepy says the pair was unable to retrieve their safety vests in time.

"Any boating accident that involves going into the water and exposing themself to the elements of the marine environment, you're very lucky to come out of that, particularly when you couldn't access your safety gear," he said.

"I believe last night the safety equipment was under a seat of the boat."

Sorry too double post but channel seven said that the boat was 4.5 m and that they were 1 km off wellington point.

I have been in some scary situations in my tinny with the seas being side onand breaking over the side but it never looked like going over....30kn +.Sounds like they have hit something especially if the cond were the way they were.

People are starting to get more and more game as time goes on. By this, I mean that people are venturing out in smaller and smaller craft, in many cases to somewhat unfamiliar territory in sometimes less than ideal conditions. To go out in a small boat at night without necessary knowledge and skill is ludicrous. People see a small boat in places that small boats never ventured in the past, and they think, "This must be easy; he can do it, so can I". Boats heading to places like Mud Island, especially at night, seem to be getting smaller all the time. They think that the close fishing grounds are only a "stone's throw" from the ramp and it's only a quick squirt home if things go bad; WRONG! Things can go really bad on the water in a very short space of time, sometimes with dire consequences. People seem to think that if they carry a mobile phone and a $50 hand-held GPS they bought at a flea market, all will be well and they can go anywhere, their boats and their skills triple in size and they are 20 feet wide, 20 feet tall and bulletproof. I got caught one night and it was one of about three times when I've been really frightened in a boat; ie. this could be it. I never want that to happen again. Nobody can ever predict what is going to happen, but some people should really take stock of their situation before they head out to that fishing spot that maybe just that little bit out of reach.

We were out of Vic Pt last night and heard rescue on the radio.

They said it was a 4.5 mtr centre console(yellow) bluefin & they were at the overturned boat at Wellington Point and searching for the people.

According to that earlier news flash that derek posted before. They are some bloody good eyes to see the lights of Wellington Point from Amity

Secondly, leaving alone how the vessel capsized. You should never leave your boat if it is still floating. Search boats were circling the capsized boat looking for survivors! Where were they? paddling off into the darkness. They were very luck, 2km off the point or not.

If it's the folks that I saw on the news, they were a bit on the "large" size. Odds are they both leaned over the side at the same time and the boat flipped. I can't for the life of me see the weather having anything to do with it.

As has been said, they should've stuck with the boat.

And yet again we get more dramatisation. Amity point my arse! They would never have made it to wello from there as they both looked as fit as my bunion. Odds are the media dreamed that one up to add a bit more shark spice. The bastards aren't happy with just an "ordinary" good luck rescue story, it has to be high drama.

Yeah Kev when they first thought Amity i thought what idiot would swim from Amity to Wello. You would be shark shit before you got to Wello 4 sure. And no way known i would have left that boat if it was still floating.
