Not sure on the species but I used to do the same type of thing down the Albert and Logan Rivers many years ago.

We used to tow a flat punt behind the tinny, the punt had a net set up on 3 sides(bow/stern and down the mid river side) we had a light in a cage in the middle of the punt and would motor along close to the bank and the mullet would jump towards the light (although I don't think the light was really needed) hit the net and drop into the punt.
Got hit many a time by mullet trying to go accross the tinny
