    How cold IS cold ???

OK so the misus and I were jutst talking and it got me wondering. Fresh water ice, salt water on ice, dry ice or maybe those little gel pac thingies that claim to last longer and are colder.

I've trawled previous 3 months of posts as I'm sure you all do and could only come up with the following which is mainly on keeping ice longer.

Can ice be too cold for keeping fish (or tinnies )?

    Cheers

Here is an article that relates to the mythbusters testing what method cooled a six pack quickest. Their final conclusion was that for practical purposes the fastest cooling method available was ice in salt water.

2 eskys one with food and water ice,

one with dry ice and water ice.

When the water ice in the food esky runs out get another bag or block out of the dry ice esky.

Only open the Dry ice esky once a day and only if you have to.

Interesting Frank, couple of mad scientists there who definitely need to be kept locked up somewhere.
So the results are in and the winner is:
1st ice and salt water win
    2nd Ice and water
    3rd Just Ice
    4th The Fridge

    Cheers, where's my cold beer!!

Re: How cold IS cold ???

The gelpak doesnt last any longer than normal ice.... just doesnt make a mess when it melts.
They claim it lasts longer, but it doesnt.

They are great for transporting fish, and are mandatory on planes.

Just keep them separate, 'cos the absorb any blood etc that gets on them and then they stink.

Good thing about them is they are re useable.

    Cheers

Re: How cold IS cold ???

Best cooling agent ever was amonium nitrate and water, but now you cant get it anymore, I got with ice and coarse salt. As the ice melts, the process of disolving the salt causes the temp to drop, and refreeze the water. Note it will break stubbies, and make em taste salty anyway!

I've used dry ice pellets when out camping and they last for about a week if you don't let the kids in the esky.
