well said JB well said!! I for one am sick to death of the garbage you hear about the police having the best interests of everyone at heart-in my 40yrs experience most of 'em couldn't care less about ya!!.Chatting to an old bike copper about his days on the job was a real eye opener about how those blokes think and act and what their motivation is-road safety didn't even enter into the conversation in over an hour.
Necessary for sure otherwise chaos would ensue 'New Orleans' style but don't kid yourself about their motivation etc etc.Myself and members of my family have been the victims of theft and assault over the years and not once have the police shown more than a passing interest and never caught any of the perpetrators, however minor infringements of traffic law have been policed vigorously over the years often causing much hardship for a slight lapse in concentration etc.
I am glad the police force is there but I for one will never kid myself that they have any kind of noble motivation. And just as a side note-life is inheritantly risky speed limits are set as an acceptable RISK-the risk part is always there and the limit is there as a quantification of what the experts agree is acceptable and yet still tenable(workable),so in the end no matter how well you police a speed limit(or boating regulations) there will always be accidents and fatalities-that's the law of the universe, but using those occurences as an excuse to increase revenue raising that's the law of greedy politicians imo.Jace.
I often wonder if the 6 knot limit is with respect to the water or to the land? I have two speed calculators on board. One spins in the water and gives me my speed relative to the water and the other is from GPS which is relative to the land.
So - if the tide is flowing at 5 knots and, in the same direction, I am doing 6 knots relative to the water, then a land based speed camera would clock me at 11 knots! (and this would show on my GPS).
This is why aircraft can fly backwards, with respect to the land, on a windy day.
I figure if the tide flows at more than 6 knots then it is not possible to keep within the law when they use a stationary speed camera. Unless of course you are going against the tide then you can do 12 knots and still be on the limit
I seem to remember a thread not long ago criticising another govt dept. about it's revenue raising ethics and it was removed for fear of retribution to ausfish members. Apparently the Police have less pull than some fishing related govt. departments. Strange that!!!
Generalisation, Australias' worst trait, all coppers are mongrels, all netters don't give shit, all rec fishos are greenies in their own right, all rec fishos obey the rules, all nurses are saints, all Public Servants are bludgers and don't give shit about their job. Sit back and have a look, all the comments are crap but I hear them regulary. All coppers aren't pigs, I know a few that are caring family men and hate causing financial distress to anyone (and they won't if at all possible), They are also community minded and donate their own time for community events, they are not bounded by the amount of revenue raised by them, some may be driven to revenue collection by promotion oportunity. I know netters that are apalled at where the industry is know and the sustainabilty in the future(i.e. beam&oyster nets) I know rec fishos that drop bait bags and don't look twice and also those that don't adhere to bag/size limits. Haven't you known the nurse from hell?? Some public servants go to work to expressly fight for a change of policy and outlook on the Public Service.
People what I am trying to say is you are insulting these people that are trying to do the right thing. It will be you and only that will break their spirit and send them to join the lesser of the groups, which in my opinion is a very big backward step.
I would like to see the end of generalisation and a beginning of picking out the positives of these situations so we can go forward, NOT backward.
If fines are truly about deterrence and safety (and no revenue raising motive), then why don't they divert the funds raised from those fines towards upgrading infrastructure and boating education?
I'd be interested to know the ratio for funds expended on water safety compared to the funds raised from boatie related fines.
