That bolt in Fixation picture is a discharge of static electricity, same thing as a normal lighning but on a smaller scale.
Happens when there is a strong wind, rain and a hot day.

apparently it is quite common to see them of SE QLD coast.
Wouldnt want to get caught up in them on the water.

I've seen 2 & have heard of quite a few others, my oldst boy even reports having seen them from the school one day, I just asked him & he said that on the day they saw 5 or 6 over half an hour.
Maybe Ballina is "waterspout alley", any other locals seen any here ?
As for going straight through one.........., you'd want to hope your bilge pump worked !

Great Pic there Dr_Dan. Anyone ever seen a bolt real up close and personal before? I've seen one twice now myself at a distance of about 10 - 15 metres away, and lived to tell the taleAwesome experience
