    PLATING ROPE TO CHAIN

Lost my anchor on the weekend and had to buy another , but need to plat rope to chain so it goes through the electronic winch ,and through the bow sprit so it wont get caught on the way up or down. If anybody has a diagram or a link to help, that would be great!
    Thanks in advance ,Insideout

I imagine if you did your own search for plaiting rope you would find a diagram or instructions on how to do it. It is a good method to learn as it can be applied in many forms.

Have no idea where to find the diagrams and I wouldn't be able to explain it because I generaly have a heap of goes to get the correct starting sequence but what you will need to look for is "splicing" not plaiting and you'll probably be looking to splice an eye onto the last link.

cant describe how to splice on here but when you learn to,dont end the three all at once, taper them off.i do that too all my ropes and dont have a problem, hope that helps.

    Try this link

    http://www.samsonrope.com/home/pdf/C..._EyeSplice.pdf

I do 4 to 6 rounds then reduce the thickness of each strand by half and do a further 4 rounds.

You should use a thimble to stop the rope wearing on the chain.

Great link Luc that's going to save me a lot of trial and error. When you reduce the thicknes of the strands do you melt the ends that are left where you trim or just leave them?

You may need one of these http://www.mushroommooring.com/Thimbles.html
H.D. Rope Thimbles -- Just open it up and get it onto the last link of chain and then follow the eyesplice directions supplied by Luc and make it tight on the thimble.

    Ropeworks at http://www.ropeworks.biz/text/arch.html#ANIMATED.
Here is the eye splice http://www.ropeworks.biz/reader/eyespli.pdf which can be used.

I thought I had references for a couple splices around anchor shackles but cannot find them as yet.

You will need to make or buy a fid http://www.ropeworks.biz/reader/fid.pdf.
But a thinner walled alloy or S/S, 'U' shaped' fid will give you a better result. You can find them in most better chandlery shops (or on the net) if you want to have a look at one.

    These may also help

    http://131.230.57.1/knots.htm

    http://www.realknots.com/index.htm

Or the newsgroup rec.crafts.knots is very useful to ask and get good responses.

Some windlass’s are very sensitive to how these are tied and also to the type of rope will work each time every time. If knots are not well tied you will always have problems.

    Hope this helps

3 strand rope to chain splice

Found the one I was looking for http://www.neropes.com/splice/default.htm

The one you probably want is the '3 strand rope to chain splice instructions'.

Or as suggested use the thimble with eyesplice/backsplice.

    Kind regards
    Trevor

    Re: PLATING ROPE TO CHAIN

Hi banshee..I usually heat seal the three rope strands before I begin the splice and then progressively peel the taper in three stages sealing each bit with a soldering iron as I work my way down the taper...hope that makes sence

    cheers
