Was just wonder, how many people were a wear of the changes to the life jacket laws that came into force on the 1st of April.
Thanks David

If you've been looking on this site anytime over the last 2 months you'd know all about them.
THANK FINGA,
Just making the point and now its a $150 fine, a nice easter holiday prize. >
David.
glad my boats over 4.8m and i only use gc seaway
Something to consider.
New regulation dictate children under 12 must wear a PFD when "a vessel is underway".
"Underway" is defined as moving.
That means, drifting for diver whiting in the Bay.
I can't see kids keeping them on in Qld's summer heat while fishing for diver whiting.

Probably should be changed to "making way" and not "underway".
Why is drifting more dangerous than being at anchor, what u can't fall out at anchor. It's not uncommon to be swamped when at anchor.
Most likely they will change it to "at all times" if there is debate on the terminology.
IMO it will be easier to purchase a larger boat than force the youngsters to wear a Mae West in summer.cheers Steve.
Another knee jerk reaction by non boating politicians.
1/ Gold coast seaway is exempt yet it has more deaths and rollovers than Cudgen,Tweed, Talli and Currumbin combined
2/ So a 16ft bondwood shitbox is seaworthy yet a new 15ft qinny is not
3/ A local Gold Coast kid who has grown up on the water needs life jacket yet a bloated unfit victorian tourist is ok without one
Its a cost negative cop out that does not address seaworthyness of vessels or ability of masters
It was inevitable that these laws were going to come in. Other states having even further reaching laws than Qld has brought in. If it saves 1 life it is a bonus. My only regret is the Government didn't do a mail out to all registered boats that are affected by the new rules. Education, not enforcement should have been there first priority.
Got myself one of the manual self inflate vests at the right price at the tackle and tinnie show on the weekend for when I'm crossing any bars. Fairly comfortable to wear and will be prepared if they decide to expand the rules.
Safe boating over the Easter break.
Jeff.

Picked up a couple of PFD1's yesterday from northside marine for $18 bucks each, that'll keep the kids legal. I saw the comment about the heat, thats one of the reasons I went with the standard PFD's rather than the vest ones. (Apart from more than double the price for the vests).

Problem is government run agencies are reactive not proactive.
Given the wind shift expected Sunday someone will get into trouble and as we all saw in the recent court case over the kids in the swamped tinny the reaction from harbours and marine will be fines and spouting off to the media.
This is reactionary policing, after the event, and will not save lives.
Why not have officers randomly stationed at the busy ramps checking safety equipment, licences and vessell seawothyness prior to people heading out.
Wont fill the government cash tin but could save a life?
the wearing of a pfd would of saved my fathers life while crossing a bar. His partner was wearing one at the time and she lived. we all think it will be ok and it wont happen to me .we wear a seatbelt in a car surely wearing a pfd while crossing a bar isnt going to hurt us besides they keep you warm on those chilly winter mornings.as for the under 12 4.8m ruling yes it does have its merits but i can see my son being very ticked off. if you read the rules mom has to hold him on her lap. more too this later //cheers barfly
Well,
Spent the whole weekend fishing the bay, with my three kids. 2 oldest in new elcheapo PDF1's, the youngest in a more expensive PDF2 vest.
Kids wore them al weekend with no complaints, no restrictions on their movements, the youngest even caught her first flathead! Daughter got a bit hot in her vest style PDF2, so will probably ger her an elcheapo as well for next time.
So my read on it? wearing jackets all the time (we were drifting, so had to be on) is not an issue, and the kids are safe.
well im a kid 14 yrs of age i go off shore 5.5m boat i dont wear a life jacket but when i was young i hated them thay were to big and heavey and restrited the movement of the arms
but now i ski on a 350 chev i loe it life jackets are the besst i have used them heaps whens kiing and thay have saved my life a few time s so kids where them i alays wear them when crossing a bar but out at sea no only if ruff and bad weather >?
so the new true mm i think the govenment should do the reseach
2/ So a 16ft bondwood shitbox is seaworthy yet a new 15ft qinny is not great point
3/ A local Gold Coast kid who has grown up on the water needs life jacket yet a bloated unfit victorian tourist is ok without one
the law is ###### thats my piont so new rules suck!!!!!!!!!!!
For any person to have lifejacket on children in a boat whether moving or stationary is good old fashion common sense.
