Why 1st light and last light???
Townsville fishing
Why is it that fishing estuaries successfully dictates that one should only fish 1st light and last light Irrespective of tides. Been experimenting and trying incoming tides with a high around midday BUT.......no bites. Fish last light and early morning(first light) with at least a few bites and the occasional catch but nothing at other times. Is it just the time of the year or is 1st light and last light the ONLY TIMES ?????????????????

I believe it is because fish spook easily in bright light conditions, low light gives them some cover to move around in shallower water. I have given up fishing the middle of the day, unless you just want to be out in the sun enjoying the day.
This does not apply so much in deep water (say 30ft plus), or very discloured water

I also fish mainly at night for the same reasons as fish2eat I find most of the inshore reefs fish better at dusk or dawn aswell although tides can make a difference aswell .
Also I find fishing at night there are less idiots on the water so its a lot quieter this is also probably makes it earier to catch fish that spook easily .

That sounds feasible to me. Townsville will start turning on the heat soon and there is no way I want to fishing in the heat of the day to go home without even a bite.

As fish2eat said, fish like most animals don't like bright sunlight and thus seek out darker/shadier spots and move around more in lower light conditions. Remember also that during the early morning light, you've got the night predators finishing their shift and heading into their holes, while the daytime species are becoming active. Obviously the opposite applies in the early evening, with night time predators coming out to hunt and daytime species seeking shelter.
Both times provide for an interesting mix of species and an array of different feeding habits, dependent on location of course.

Good to hear,
I will limit my fishing to early mornings and sundown. Too hot up here to be fishing when the fish are as hot as I am.............
Thanks
