What would Happen if Something went wrong????

I saw Tunamans post he just put up and it give me an idea of a post we could all benefit from.

What would happen If something bad went wrong on the water???? i.e heart attack, stroke ect. How quickly could you respond and get help and how would you go about it. Would you get on to the coastguard???? 000???? It can be a sticky situation.

So what would you do, how would you get help there asap if you didn't have much time????

    cheers Jono

the first call would have to be mayday call
then you would want to hope there was still at least a couple of able bodies left, never had to do it but in all the first aid course I have done they have told us you cant perform cpr very long by yourself. But there has been documented cases that defy this.
I would much rather have to treat blood loss than heart attack or simular.
I used to fish with a mate who regularlly had epaleptic fits and we use to put a safety harness and lead on him when fishing piers or rocks

This is why I can't go to some places with my wife, there is no one else around and she wouldn't be able to lift me out of the boat to a car to seek help. hours from anywhere, even if it was say a broken leg, or just knocked out

fishintillate & Tunaman - very useful thread i reckon - and one I hope few of us have to del with.

I guess the first thing to say ios - DON'T PANIC!! Think for (a quick) moment, what can YOU immediately do to minimize danger to the affected person and others - then the mayday call to get some ideas of how long away help is, and maybe some guide/ instruction about what to do while waiting. Often in emergency situations the mayday call will also alert nearby vessels, so some help is likely to come sooner, depending on where you are.

I rerckon its worth every boatie having some basic info on board on how to deal with some of the unexpected medical emergencies. Also, a good 1st aid kit should be compulsory in my books! I reckon I'm more likely to use that than a v-sheet or mirror!!

Question for me is who do you radio in the event of the nearby VMR's etc not being manned?

Re: What would Happen if Something went wrong????

i think for me personally that is the one reason why i wouldnt like GOT go out all by himself

otherwise uhmm its a good question
basis in first aid trying to stay calm and definetly a good first aid kit and then call for help and hope they get there fast
i dont think there is much else one can do ???

    regards anya

Guys...if t is a heart attack or a stroke or some form of severe personal injury I believe the correct radio call is a Pan Pan call...a mayday is only when the vessel is in imminent danger.

I got my wife to do the radio license so that she is aware of the correct procedure and there is the mobile if in range.

Other than that, hope like hell the people with you have some first aid knowledge.

I would have to agree with puks for sure. and knowing first aid will
help alot. but going out by my self is something I do a lot.
and if something went wrong, keeping a cool head is number one.

Would it not be OK to set off the EPIRB if there was serious injury, stroke or heart attack.

I think everyone, angler or not, should do a senior first aid course. Hopefuly you will never need to use most of the stuff you learn but you will have the knowledge if you need it.

Depending on the actual problem, the first thing to do would be to ring Tripple O, or a Pan Pan call if you are on a boat, and then attend to the person.

Re: What would Happen if Something went wrong????

This is an interesting post. Maybe part of the answer for the future is, to have to do a first aid course as part of the boat licence. It wont do anything about the problem right now but it will further down the line. Common sense and not panicing must come into play very early.

Know your companions and if they have medication that they need, eg nitro for a heart condition or dilantin for epilepsy etc. We are responsible for our crew, but who is responsible for us.

    mayday for life threating situation
    panpan for non life threatening

please correct me if this is wrong but I think the call is made on human edangerment and not vessel endangerment.

I would call heart attack as mayday.

Pays to do a first aid course whether one owns a boat or not.Especially if one has a familly and the need arises.
Some new changes with cpr as well , which i must say arent going down too well with some but have proven a lot simpler..
Have Children in the familly??, which are prone to the odd choking from a tidbit of food is not a mere slap on the back to disslodge it as is possible to lodge it instead and must know the proper way to lay over ones knee or whatever and a good hand to the back..
Anyway , in simple terms..DO THE COURSE if you can and it may just pay in the end.
As for boating ad safety??..Be prepared and have a plan of attack whether it be a supposed heart attack or and anchor letting go , drifting towards a reef with the motor failing to start!!..
Yet, theres a risk to everything we do whether we leave home or stay indoors..Little bit of knowledge and bein prepared dont hurt none...
    Cheers

The sad part is that if everyone did do a first aid course, this does not mean that they are obligated to perform first aid. However, I know I would (and have numerous times), but would everyone, I think not? Unfortunately some people are still of the understanding that you can be prosecuted for applying incorrect treatment .
