Thread: Found in Gladstone marina

    Re: Found in Gladstone marina

We have a few big-uns around here at 1770. One frequents the estuary and is often hand fed at the jetty. Another very large one and several slightly smaller ones are seen around one of the rock fishing platforms. I have lost many fish to the old bugger. He has worked out the best place to land a fish and as soon as one is hooked he goes and lies right underneath, waiting for you to bring your fish within range. One morning my son and I lost 5 bluefin between 15-20pounds, fish lures the whole lot. He grabbed a 35 pounder I had on one morning It is amazing to see the speed these guys get up, you have got a bluefin tuna screaming along at the end of your line, and the big fella actually catches up and up to half his body leaves the water as he crashes down over the top of the bluie!!! We once had him chase a fish right up onto the rock, about 3/4 of him out of the water, he waited for the next swell and then rolled himself back into the water Great fun to watch!!!
There was a bigger one that lived there that was killed by some spearo's years ago, just for the sake of thier ego. Also was told of one that was speared in the estuary. It was dragged up next to the boat ramp, a fillet roughly removed from one side, then pushed back into the water to rot >
They are magnificent creatures, and should be respected as such.
I have to wonder why the one in the photo was deemed to die of old age, they certainly grow a lot bigger than that fella, many reaching 300 + kg.

    Regards, Tony

Wonder if that gladstone harbour oil spill
earlier in the year may have finally taken its toll.

Know Aukland Ck and the Marina were both affected

Yeah phatty I know it was a while back, but a fish that size
would have eaten a lot of smaller fish that had been affected
by that spill, even if it was not directly affected, would be
interested to hear of any toxicology results.
Exposure to some chemicals etc takes years to kill, but can kill
    a lot quicker if ingested.

    Cheers Mick

    Re: Found in Gladstone marina

why would I be taking the piss? We caught our fish on a 100gm knife jig while jigging some reefs about an hour out from Cairns. Like I said, I am 6 feet tall and when I laid down next to the fish he was as long as me.

I didnt like the taste of it much but the mates family said it was fantastic. Caught on 80lb braid, TLD25 fished on a T-Curve 37kg rod.
