I am of the opinion, that you are better off, with the inflatable jackets, but one that you have to inflate yourself.
This then allows you to get out from under, before inflation. What are your thoughts?

it can be flat, but thats often because there is little or no wind, but the current will inevitably be there on the incoming and especially outgoing tide... PFD is essential

    Yeah Dnej,
I have the manual inflate jacket exactly for that reason. Would hate to have the boat go over and then have to take the thing off to get out from under it. Also it gives you the option of swiming for a while until you get tired then just pull the cord. For these reasons i think they are just so valuable.

Have you ever tested it out. Do you think the inflation mechanism would be difficult to use in the dark?

I've got an auto inflate because I'm too lazy to pull the ripcord.
Seriously I think with the sort of fishing I do I've got more of a chance of falling out and hitting my head on the way out than ending up underneath an upturned hull.
THere is also a manual inflate option on the auto model and I don't think there would be a problem with it in the dark, it is a Stormy Seas and you just rip the pocket off-no need to find a cord in the dark. If I was doing bar crossings I would probably go for the manual option. It is just a matter of horses for courses as per everything else in life and especially fishing.

Stormy seas jacket I bought was $260 for auto model and manual RFD one I bought was $100. Big price difference but the stormy seas one is a lot more comfortable.
