Road Kill for crab pot bait

A few weeks ago someone posted a question about what the best bait was for crab pot baits. Someone told him to use road killand I mentioned that he should check first before using road kill as I was told you can cop a heavy fine if caught. I said I never bothered to check if that was right or not but it was that silly it probably was. Well I've got off my bum and have checked with the fisheries who did not know but advised me to check with the EPA.
    Their reply follows

    ]Thank you for your email.
Kangaroo meat can be used as bait providing the following procedure is followed.

Kangaroo meat arising from road kill must not be used for bait.

The bait must be sold in a sealed container which is labelled with the following details:
    1. The name of the harvester and their license number.
    2. What part(s) of the kangaroo is in the container, e.g. roo tails and paws, etc.
    3. The date the kangaroo was harvested and the property it came from.

In other words, the kangaroo meat must be treated as a 'processed product'. It must be possible to trace where that product came from right up until it is used by the person.

The relevant legislation is the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and its Regulations, and the Nature Conservation (Macropod) Conservation Plan 2005.

Never knew that this would be the case - in fact I thought it would be fair game.

Does it apply to any other road kill?

I would assume this would apply to any protected native fauna,if however you stumble upon a feral pig, buffalo, camel, horse, donkey, goat, fox, rabbit or hare(have I missed any?)then I guess you would be applauded for eradicating pest species and helping to save the enviroment!!
    cheers and happy hunting.

I imagine that it would only apply to natives. Rabbits, hares ,goats etc should be o.k I imagine, but then again my thinking and the thinking of the public servants who bring in these laws is vastly different. I would have thought it would be easy to determine the difference between a skippy that was head shot and one that was smacked with a 30 tonne semi obviously the EPA doesnt seem to think so. Maybe they think that by using road kill we are depriving the crows from a free feed

I was thinking that the crab eats the road kill then we eat the crab. Just a little concerned about infectious disease and parasites that may be passed on within that chain of events.
I know that many are now thinking. God... your worried about that? Do you know whats in the bottom of the bay? Dont be so gullible.
    Just a thought though.

My guess is the Enviroment Protection Agency is a government body. The roo shooter needs a license to shoot the roos. So he pays the government for the license. He shoots the roo and then you pay to use the roo meat. Makes cent and dollars for the government to tell use to buy the meat and not use road kill (recycle) [smiley=hammer.gif]

    Woodsy.

If you eat crabs that have eaten Greenies, you will probably get the runs

ID'ing the Roo has always been a pain in the but. Many years ago I was a roo shooter, we had to waste so much Roo meat, because it was 1 tag 1 roo, and the tag went on the skin, which we sold, so we were not allowed to sell or use the carcass, they were just left to rot (and feed the wild pigs) in the paddock.

Just another example of greenie inspired waste.

Roo is the best tasting meat and I wouldn't be paying for Roo meat just to use in the pot. Mind you crabs taste pretty yum.

How would someone know if you filletted of a Roo off the road, or bought one from the butcher?

    LOL kev!
