I am buying a new fly rod for chasing longtails do more pieces in the rod take away the lifting power in the butt section of the rod?
Any advice will be most welcome
Hi steve I have 2 piece and 3 piece, the more pieces you have the slopier it gets, I don,t care what other people say, I have the proof from mine unless you want something to pack up smaller than i wouldn,t recomand, the two piece i have lot practical to assemble i just break it up with the line on chuck it in the car go diffrent location and put it back in a minute all ready to cast I can,t do that with the 3 piece one tangles [everywhere].
thats my experience.
good luck Vince.

Are the two rods identical apart from the number of pieces? I have heard that it makes no difference so many times. A 4 piece would be ideal as it can be cacked small when it needs to be, and used as a two piece for chucking the rigged rod in the car.
hi Adam the rods are identical I can tell the diffrence when I use one for a while and then go back to the other one, if you testing them both at the same time you can,t feel much diffrence.
for what you said about breaking them yes for piece is ok for spliting them no hassles.
cheers vince.
Well technically, and thats what we are talking about, there is no subjective opinion here. If you use a 2 piece the ferrule is in the middle of the rod, and will have high stress as the rod bends on the other hand a 3 piece has the botton ferrule in the butt where the rod is stronger and the breakage chances are less. The top ferrule is not in a high stress area, unless you high stick it.
But the best rod by far is a one piece, because of the lack of ferrules which create areas where the rod walls increase in size, which can cause problems.
I'm not against any rod format but for the kind of fishing I do, after years of 2 piece sticks, 3 pieces is the better format. Particularly with graphite rods which are very high modulus and do fracture easily if you mistreat them. Max
Thanks guys for answering my first post. All your advice was taken on board.I ended up buying a g-loomis 10/11 GL3 MEGA in a 2-piece
I was so impressed with the rod i bought two.
thanks again
