Most of the best bass flies are based on black. We use what we call a leech pattern. Best tied on a gamakatsu B10S in size 4 or 2. It consists of black or purple crystal chenille wrapped around the shank with a strip of raddit zonka(black) cut 1/2 as long again as the hook length so the 1/2 piece hangs out the back as a tail tied in over the chenille atthe starting cuve of the gape and the other end tied off just behind the eye. We use small to medium bead chain eyes to help sink the fly and a striper 4 flyline in water over about 15 feet deep as the bass generally hold in the lower part of the water column.

bass don't seem to be fussy about flies. I've caught loads on small saltwater surf candies, white mudeyes, deer hair bugs- well just about anything I've put in their path!
