    Flyfishing Townsville

Have just moved from Darwin to Townsville. Any ideas on some spots to chuck a fly around the area. Fresh or Saltwater doesn't matter, will throw a fly at anything with fins. Land-based at the moment though. Any info would be appreciatted.

    Cheers Jase.

    Hi Jase,

I am in Airlie beach, but used to live in Townsville, and Darwin for that matter. The Ross river has some good fish in it, best around the weirs. The lowest one is also tidal.

If you drive up to Cattle creek (just south of ingham) you can always catch tarpon there, any time of the day!!! It' s a great spot.

A freind of mine Jupiter lives in Townsville, he is a keen fly fisho. Ask at the tackle shop on Ingham road for him, nice bloke.

And if you really want and ask nicely I will tell you were to catch Jungle Perch!!!

    Hope that helps,

    Re: Flyfishing Townsville

If you walk through the softball fields on queens road then look down to the river there is a large rock bar that is exposed at high tide. Plenty of room for a land based person to get their back cast in. I have been tempted to try it myself but only have a k-mart 6/7 wt and am scared of what a Barra may do to it. The rock bar goes 4/5 the way acrosss the river and fish have to go around it on its one open side. Don't be tempted to go on to the other bank though, it's DPI property!

    Paul,

The Barra's on your 6/7 wont be any worse than the GT's were on your overheads

Thanks for the tips. Andy, I would certainally like to have a crack at some Jungle Perch and Sooties. Have never caught Jungle Perch before would like to fish more sweetwater country. Keen to give Peter Faust and Koombaloomba a go on fly aswell, should have a boat in the next 5 or 6 weeks.

    Cheers Jase

You're right Snelly, and it's not doing any good sitting in the rack waiting for that trip to Tassie again. Time to risk it, who knows... If any strip me I'll at least get some excitement out of it and the dept of war & finance may allow the upgrade. Shattered fingers here I come!

    Paul,

My deckie last weekend made the mistake of putting his reel a tad close to his Jatz Crackers on one of those Trevors - Brings tears to your eyes don't it !!!!!
