Reel Problem

I have an Okuma Integrity I 10/11 reel which has really started to corrode badly. Mechanically I've been happy with the reel and looked after it well ,even bought the missus one. Though they only cost a bit more than a couple of hundred dollars each, I expected a bit more. Any ideas on how to stop the corrosion and what may be causing the problem? Line and reel are washed after each session. Reels are about 18 mnths old.

Jase,

Do you keep the reel attached to the reel seat all the time?
Is the reel seat metal? Your Okuma might be acting as a sacrificial anode.

Hi Jason W,

I have noticed a lot of reels specify that they are for salt-water or fresh water. The salt water gear is stainless steel and shouldn't rust or tarnish if cared for properly which you have done. I have heard stories of folks from around here (Chicago) who have gone on vacation to the ocean for some fishing and they use their regular freshwater gear. By the time they get back, it's shot. The salt eats it up. Could this be the problem?

Dale Tan's suggestion is a good one too. I never thought of that. Different metals will react chemically to eachother. That's why you have to use the same material in your pipes around the house. Thanks Dale! I'm going to take off my reels from the rods right away!

My suggestion would be to take the line and backing off. Completly pull the reel apart and coat it all with Lanolin spary. Then put it back together.

How old is the reel ??? I have had one now for a year or more and no signs of the big C yet.

The reels are only 18 months old Jack Lives Here. Noticed the corrosion appearing about six months ago. Cleaned up any visible signs of corrosion about three mnths back. Coated with a rust-kill paint, yet it coninues. Not a bad thought Dale, have always stored the reels complete. I'll also give that Lanolin spray ago Sneelly. I don't want rust affecting the integrity of my flyline and backing. Thanks for the info.
