You are a legend. i see you the other day holding a monster spaniard and now you want to catch the humble girella. I hope you are a man of patience and cunning.
You won't be able to use your "thrash the water to foam" tactics that you probably employ when you chase those poor longtails to death. Unlike the longies, which probably bite your fly in exasperation, these things will just sucker you along. You will get a new perspective of real fishing when you nail one. good luck. When you get desperate send me a line.
Hint.... June/July Fisherman island
A few years ago when I was still living in Brissy... I use to chase the humble luderick... I was shown the ropes by the late 'prickly' Pete Davis, who was an absolute legend with these things... Pete was one of these nigger fisherman who just had it absolutely down pat... where to go at which part of the tide and what to use... given the heads up on these things I managed to land quite a few of these things on fly...
Things to keep in mind:
1. Berley is essential, it must be fresh and must have the right mix of chopped cabbage mixed with sand... the sea cabbage must be really fresh... one of the places you could try get this stuff is near the Woody Pt jetty on a low tide...
2. Fly - i found small nigger hooks the best... the long-shank green one that Mustad put out a few years ago is ideal... dub green seal's fur on it sparingly in much the same way as you would to tie a BMS (bullen merri special... damn i feel like a trouty these days....).... i'm sure you could tie the weed flies using the SLF fibres that you use for BMS as well
3. How to fish it... niggers are really switched on fish... plus they have pretty small mouths... they commonly nibble the fly and if there's something not right (e.g. drag etc), they won't take... so best to run a floating line with a nymph indicator... the fly has to be at the right depth too... and one good way of adjusting the depth of your fly and the speed with which it gets to that depth is to get a packet of those different size reusable split shots... that way you can adjust accordingly
4. Location... i did most of my fishing down on the gold coast... best to start off with locations where there is a small drop-off and not too much current e.g. try the isle of capri bridge on the runout
gimmi a ring and i will refer you one to some fellas that have done well on them in the past. from what they have told me they are super trickey and require some serious persistance.
quinny - you missed out big time tonite - as we per the message!
Justin,,,I just heared your message just then, what gig was it? My Mob phone dont work very well (battery only lasts 2 hrs).and I was stuck at a friends house.
Wes, Ive watched those Blackfishermen up at Colaundra , looks like a fun style of fishing, the end of your floating line would prob work as a strike indicator.Green Estaz on a hook is what alot of the standard tackle fishers use on a 2nd hook, the fish can pick your bait with out you knowing so this gives a 2nd option 4 a hit. Looks like fun. MQ
was unanimus, japunga and the butterfly effect down at my local, had a few tickets spare but couldnt get hold of ya. Ended up scalping them at the door so that payed for the booze.
