Hi guys I have never caught a longtail, I was wondering if kingfish fight as hard, I have caught fair few of them the way they strip line from a locked drag, and play dirty too I am wandering, I would like to catch a longtail one day.
this one went 6-1/2kg first run striped 100-120m backing in 5seconds, I was fishing with 8wt.

Ive never got a Kingy on fly, Id love to however. They are different types of fish, a Kingy will always have cover or structure on its mind, a longy will run for the hills, just gotta wind it all the way back. Id GUESS a Kingy would be the tougher to land, those are nice fish youve been posting, for an #8 its awsome, extra kudos if there from the Seaway. Matt Q

To me a kingies a WRX, the Longtail a 5.8 GTHO...
Kingy, the high reving things they are , cant match the torque of a line burning longtail...
Would love to get one of each, similar sized, within a couple of casts of each other....
For stamina, the longy would have to win, but off the blocks, and doing all it takes to get free, it'd be the kingy...
Where are there good, targettable numbers of both , Coffs??

I have caught both on Fly - The Kingy has the power but in most cases its trying to not get bricked that decides success or failure. With the Longtail while its not going to brick you, you have to survive the long runs and their stamina.
As Matt said different fish but both great flyrod targets. Difficult to say one is better than the other.

Bannaboy - Good idea there - The seaway would give you a good shot at a good fish on a Yak - and the sharks would not be a problem but getting run over would be
I've only got a small rat kingie(3-4kg) off a beacon. It didn't stand a chance with my 15 weight.
Kingies are dirty fighters, where as Longies have more speed and endurance. It's amazing how fast a Longie can go when it's got a shark up it's backside.
A "dirty fighting" Tuna I'd like to tackle would be a Dogtooth Tuna. Hangs around structure and will head for home when hooked. Only landed small one(5-6kg) on bait.
You can get a good idea how fast a fish can swim by having a look at the shape of its tail. The smaller and streamlined the tail, the faster it will swim. Examples Tuna, Wahoo, Mackeral, Billfish.
Another speedster I'd like to tackle would be a Darwin Harbour Milkfish. You get to see a lot of backing with these.
I've landed several Sailfish(the fastest fish on the planet) on fly. They are good fun and they jump, but burn out fairly quickly if you put the pressure on them.

Nat are we talking about same size fish, because I have hooked up bigger ones and the drag you can hardly pull line with your hand this fellows strip 140-150m of backing line and cut you off on the rocks within 5 seconds without a pose.
on monday I lost 2 fly lines, one of them with 100m of backing 25pound braid, its becoming bit expensive this days,
Duckbill there are tourist coming there in kayaks when the weather is good, but you better bring an ancker with you, if the fish don't pull you the current will.

just got my self a dagger drifter to use in the rivers chaseing the bream and in the upper rivers for bass
wouldn't mind trying to get out west around oct to chase a nice cod or two
alot of fun but
Vince... landed them up to about 5kg so cant accurately compare to say, 15kg longies...
Keen to give 'em a go though...I'll provide the boat if you want if you want to link up some day.. ?
Out of interest, how many kg tippet and what reel are you using ?
