Could someone PLEASE tell me why Fly Fishing lessons here in Victoria are so expensive ? I would love to learn ALL about that type of fishing, but the price holds me back. I believe you cant learn the skills required, with one lesson. I have spoken to Fly fishermen on the banks of rivers , but they are reluctant to talk. ( I wonder if it is a SECRET society, like the "Masons" ) Any answers ??
Most flyfishos think they are elite.. pfft.. ive seen 10yr olds who cast better after 1 week then some flyfishos who have done it for 15yrs..
Dont honestly know why its expensive down there, but up here in Qld, you ask for a lesson and 99% of the people who flyfish would be willing to give you a few pointers.. its just another excuse to go out for a fish
The best way to start learning is to go along to a Fly Fishing Club meeting. You will find that most fly fisherman are pretty friendly and prepared to pass on information. I can't agree with Tim. You will find the elitist in all areas of the fishing fraternity however fortunately they are in the minority.
Depending on where you live there are clubs that have people that teach the art of fly fishing and casting on such club is Yarra Valley Fly Fishers they do their teaching every sunday they can be contacted at. www.yvff.com.au
Another good way to learn is to book yourself on a charter with a flyfishing guide, you get a lesson and also the chance to catch a couple of fish all in the one cost .I am self taught,at the start I made a complete mess of it all, destroying fly's quicker than I could buy the things but after watching a couple of Lefty Kreh's instruction videos and going out with a good flyfishing guide it all made sense and now its the first rod I pick up for any type of fishing around here(Mackay). Then there is fly tying, another passtime in itself you will find very enjoyable.
