    Re: only new to flyfishing

    Hey mate,

I have been fly fishing for a many of years now and in most situations from trout, pelagics and now Bass as I now live in Brisvagus.

I will say now, welcome to the dark side!!! Once in the dark side, you will never go back. You will have alot of research ahead of you and all I can say is just get out there and practice, and never ask the question at tackle shops "what do I need?", as your pocket will dwindle.

Your line really depends on where you are fishing (fresh or salt) and what for? I now fish for Bass and Saratogas in freshwater impoundements, so use a 6 or 8 wgt rod because of the trees/snags and also the large flies I have to lob at them. Fly line again depends on the fly rod wgt and your preferance, I like to use 5/6 wgt line on the 8 wgt rod. I like to use a wgt forward line, so I cut my line in half, so instead of one 50m line, I get two 25m long wgt forward lines. I find 50m is far too long and a waste; 25m line will also act as a shoting line to get those big flies out further. The other q? also is "floating line or intermediate or sinking line?" If you can get a reel with two spools, then get both, but again depends on where you are fishing and if you are fishing surface or sub-surface etc.

It is like anything, the more money you spend, the better quality gear you have, resulting in better performance. I use loomis and powell rods and get a good reel with a quality ratchet.

I do advise professional help or a guide, and hire a couple of dvd's from tackle shops, or even join a fly fishing club.

Any other info just ask... and remember that this is just my perseptions and everyone is different.

    Hi,

The line colour doesn't make a big difference when fishing unless you are going for really spooky fish like trout, permit, jungle perch, etc.

A bright line like you have is a great beginners tool, it lets you see what you are doing. You should always use about 6-9 feet of tippet & leader. This a clear usually monofilament which seperates your fly and fly line.

And yes, definately get some casting lessons and perhaps a guide, it will save you years of frustration. But make sure it's someone who teach's, not just someone who knows how to fish, there's a big difference there.

Also don't be afraid to ask for help.
