I've carried a booby in my fly box for over 10 years, one of the first flies I bought, and always been to "afraid" to use it because I've never known how ?
Any advice ?

Yes Thumps 10 points to you.
A booby is a fly that has a polysterene / foam "ball" tied in near the eye of the hook. I googled a pic - see attached.
My understanding is that it is used in large, deep still waters - but I'm not sure
Hi Mike,
Youre right, its meant to be fished off a sinking line so that when you strip, it dives down then slowly floats up on the pause. Other popular surface flies like Dahlbergs and Gurglers were originally intended for the same purpose. Should work great on shut down fish that are sitting on the bottom, or on bottom hugging ambush predators like flathead (don't know if you have them over there?).
Cheers
Duncan
boobies...balls and some one googling
hmmmm
leave it at that
Thanks....that's what I thought but was never sure - slow steady retrive, jerky or fast strip
Oh and Thumps don't go there, I've been chuckling all the way through this question.
