was after some advice on what to buy in the way of breathable waders. I fish from the bank in winter, and also fish from the boat as well. I want something to keep me warm, but also able to move around with not to much trouble. If anyone can give me some advice on what brand and approx price that would be great. Do i then need wading boots to use as well, even if i am fly fishing from the boat?.
You could try panty hose? Waders with holes breathe quite well too. Why would you want to wear waders while fishing from your boat, I assume it's to keep warm or does she leak? Sorry about the flip comments Latitude 34256, couldn't help myself.
Seriously though. I've been trout fishing in New Zealand winters for some 60 years and started as a kid with gumboots (wellies) (parents couldn't afford waders) Without doubt the best are the foam models as far as keeping warm goes however, they all get hot when in the sun and there's not much you can do. The thin plastic type cause sweating and you can find yourself wondering where the leak is after a few hot hours...it's you! Would you really need waders in Queensland waters if that's where you're you from?
I might suggest you get hold of a cheap pair of plastic waders, get some "long Johns" and a pair of boating boots...$30-40. Take these off after sun up and fish in shorts. Assuming you're not walking through blackberry bushes etc this will do nicely.
I hail from melbourne but dont hold that against me. I wanted to use them in winter to keep warm as wear i fish it can get down into the minuses early morning in the lakes and reservoirs. I was looking at sims waders but not to sure if anything else is available. Some guys i speak to just wear thermals and with the waders are very warm and dont sweat. I have a mako craft estaury tracker tournament boat that i bought from qld and it is a great boat to fly cast from. Thanks for the reply
Mate having lived in the Snowys and ACT for ten years ( prior to moving North sevreal years ago.), I was able to try several types and styles of waders.
As far as the cold goes, I wouldnt spend the money on breathables ,but prefer to buy a pair of neoprene full lengths.
Under these wear a pair of fleece tracksuit pants with thermals under and you will be able to stay out when all teh other gus are going home.
( Known as layering- thermals should be poly as they wick moisture, or just use good old long johns- I DO!)
The benefit too is that you can wade out depeer cos they will be much warmer than the breathables.
Breathables were more introduced for warmer temps when the body expels moisture, and they are designed to wick the moisture off the body.
In summer you can simply roll neos down and wear them as waist highs, again allowing you to wade a bit deeper.
For my money you get a good set of neos,( look at Snowbee, Daiwa ,Shakespeare )I use the Snowbees and never had a problem in 10 years) and a pair of cheap hiking boots, get these 1 or 2 sizes bigger than your normal size, take the waders with you and try em on, they dont have to anything special just cheapys.
Thanks oscar64 for the reply. Was talking to some guys yesterday and they share the same as what you were saying about the neoprenes and long johns. Will have a look on the weekend at these.
I have a set of neoprenes - bought several years ago and still going strong- xtremly comfortable- I have used them in the snowys(winter and summer)/walking small trout waters and Port phillip Bay. At times when it gets hot I roll em down as suggested above- i tried the placky ones- fulls and thighs( sweat, rips, holes)Am happy with what I got- the brand is Fly and Dry- made in Tassie- as far as I know they have a good rep- will custom make them for you- good investment in the long run. mine have the boots mould in but from recollection you can go the other way also.
