All the numbers are singles, except the one that counts!!!!!!!!

    6 feet of water
    9 weight rod
    40 + kg marlin

That must have taken some experience to stop a run in that shallow a water with that weight rod. The dude must be stoked no end. Well done and congrats

Unbelievable - what a hoot !! especially on a 9wt in skinny water as these size billies can really motor, and usually blow away light tippets.

All credit to the team on capturing this billie. Well done to all - on ya Paul!!

In the 1970, Ron pearson made a free cast, no teasing, at a sailfish feeding off a bait school and landed it. It was done on a glass 12# and was the first billfish landed by an Australian Swoffer. Its a long time ago, but I havent heard of anyone making free casts to billfish and landing them, world wide not just OZ since that time. Good catch though, tough about the 30 tippet on the 9 weight.

Looking back at things that happened fly fishing circa 1969 etc, I remember standing on the bow of a boat right under Vlaming point Exmouth, during their game contest and casting a wopping Jock Grey popper to a sail in the reef area in about 6/7 feet of water. I did it three times and that was that. No take. Very heady time was that.
So I understand the elation of doing it and getting a result. I used a Fenwick FF115 12# rod and a 15lb tippet. The reel was a converted Alvey boat reel, 6" machined to fit into a much modified 5" aluminium saucepan. Big reel, very heavy, but didn't really work so it ws dumped.

Gidday to all and Merry Christmas.

There will no doubt be many claims and counter claims as to who did it first etc etc...
as far as I know up here, Justin and James was teh first one. I will stand coerrected, if I am incorrect.

But Justin has been targetting and getting these fish for a few months now, not necessarily on fly but on all tackle.

Luckily the guys have the opportunity up here to get out when the conditions are right. Plenty of us have set times to go out an have a chance at a shot only to drag our arses out of bed at 0400 to find the wind is on and will only get stronger. So then its pick another target.

James' capture is especially rare due to the rods and light tippet used, Josie( Justins wife) drove the boat while the boys kept the fish tight. She must have done an awesome job , as the leader had No bill rub. And anyone who has fished for billies of any sort will attest to teh amount of bill rub you get on leaders.

To all the guys who have since made captures form the area well done.

Waiting to get out and have a shot at em as well...... one day!
