    Help with Evinrude

    Hi fella's,

I just installed a new water pump in my 1975 135hp evinrude ( first boat therefore my first waterpump). The manual told me to put the shift lever in reverse prior to disassembly of the shift rod linkage which I did. Finished the water pump, reinstalled gearcase, hooked up the shift rod linkage and tested going from forward to reverse which it worked ok. Went to lubricate a few linkage joints and again went from neutral to forward but when I tried to go back to reverse it stops at neutral and will not go into reverse. What have I done?. I did remove the throttle and gear linkages in the motor to get to the shift rod linkage but I put them back as they where. Is this just a coincidence and has the forward reverse controls had it, if so is there anything in there to look for,it's got a warm up lever on it as well.
Hope someone may have experienced something like it in the past and can put me in the right direction.

    Thanks

i bet my left testicle you have tried to change gears with out the motor running this puts strain on the forward controls and will cuase it to jump teeth. if you dismantle your forward controls the problem will be obvios. if you want to double check this is right before you dismantle it, disconect the gear cable at motor and see if you can change gears with the lever on motor. this is what happend to my 78 evin

    good juck

p.s there is a ball bearing on a spring to make your lever click when it goes into neutral this will fly out and disapear over the horizon if not careful.

    Hi Mick
You were spot on, unfortunately I couldn't work this out myself so I took it to the marine shop in Tamworth early yesterday and they informed me that was the trouble, so they replaced a small part with plastic teeth and a metal arm on it ( I couldn't see anything wrong with the part) and got charged $135.00 for the trouble. I guess I'll put it down to experience. Thanks again Mick
