    Tie Down Straps

    I have a 455 Hornet with 70HP Johno

It has a safety chain on the front, it is loose.

I run a strap over the rear just in front of the motor. I use strap protectors and only ratched up firm.

The paintwork is marking from the straps.

I am thinking that if I change the front safety chain to make it tight and fit a motor support bracket I could eliminate the boat strap.

I would use the strap off road.

Do you have any methods for holding the boat to trailer you care to share ?

I use two shorter straps on the transom to the rear of the trailer.
this eliminates the need to go over the boat, and holds down good.
You can even use two stainless eyebolts to replace two of the motor mounting bolts and run from there to the trailer .
These bolts will cost about $20 each but it will stop scratching up your nice duco .

I use a similar strap on my 400 hornet its about 60mm wide. It put a small mark on the paint 1st time i used it so i went to a carpet shop asked the guy for some underlay scraps. I used a industrial sewing machine to sew a 70mm wide strip of underlay to the strap where it would be touching the boat. The underlay is about 10mm thick and seems to be doing a good job. If it gets a bit old or dirty ill just go get some more.
    Good luck. Cheers Justin.

    Re: Tie Down Straps

The 2 straps at the rear / transom eliminate all together the marking of paintwork.

The s/s eye are good, but I don't use them, just wrap the strap around the trailer. I do, however, put carpet under the winch on the tie down straps.

Further, the safety chain issue is not a problem. Tie a " launching rope " on the front bollard, over the front and down to the trailer, couple of half hitches should get it tight. Then you always have a rope ready for launching, as well as being the extra safety rope.

Yeh, transom straps for my hornet also. Attach to each strap to the grab handles. Slipped some garden hose over the hooks so they don't mark the paint.
I also use a small turnbuckle from the winch hole to the trailer.

Problem with Transom straps is my trailer finishes 10 inches before the end of the boat

Mine is about the same. I connect one end hook to the trailer and where the strap contacts the hull, I've put a piece of carpet, fluffy side down. No rub marks to date - it's been to hinchy and back like that.
