I have had my 435 trophy for a bit over a year now and originally bought it with a 40hp Merc 2 str pull start and have just traded up to a Yamaha 50hp 4 str with all the whistles and bells and have not looked back. Not knowing a lot about motors when I bought it I never thought the benifits would be so great. It might cost a bit more initially but the fuel economy, quietness not to mention the ease of electric start & trim and tilt is amazing. The hornet hulls are just awesome and then put an electric on the front and you have a top outfit.

A 50hp motor is the way to go, however, sadly the Honda is the only 4 stroke you can fit without the possibility of voiding your insurance. The 2004 model 435 Trophy is rated to 50hp, but a maximum motor weight of 100kg. The Merc's and Yammies weigh 112kg. You can get around it by ordering a boat with a side console. Be sure to ask your dealer about fitting a heavier motor, and ask for something in writing to show that the factory have approved it. Insurance companies can be a bit picky when it comes to paying out money.
As for performance, I have a 50 EFI Merc 4st on mine (approved), and it hoots along. Toddy has a 50 Merc 2 st on his and it beats me out of the water, but I may have a touch more top end than him. He'll probably debat that though.
