    Corrosion on brand new Honda?

    Hi All,

I recently purchased a brand new Honda 50HP 4 stroke for my 15 ft tinny. I’ve put about 30 hours on it and I’m really upset that on the upper part of the leg (on both sides) is covered in what looks like dried salt. It’s not salt because it doesn’t dissolve in hot water and it can’t even be scrubbed off. It can be scratched off with your fingernail but I fear that I’ll scatch it if I have to scatch it off all the time. It’s in a distinct area on both sides and tapers off down the leg. When I run the motor, the affected areas seem to be the warmest parts. It is really weird because the boat dealers say they’ve never seen it before (crap I think), but I had the same problem on a new 40HP Yamaha 2 stroke. I take really good care of my boat and motor, I wash them after every use and flush the motor for 10 minutes or so. Anyone got an idea what’s going on and how I can prevent it.

    Thanks

    Shane.

Hi, could it be a form of calcite? Get some CLR or equivalent product from the supermarket. If that does not dissolve it right in front of your eyes, it is the maufacturers problem. I have heard that Honda is very consumer orientated, you would be a good test case for us punters. nq

seen it on mine since new but it hasnt affected the performance, after a while your motor should get some charcter marks, wait till a billfish gives it a rub up

It's not corrosion, I think its from the heat affecting the paint. I had the same thing with my 50 hp honda.Yours is not the only one, it's very common in the 4 strokes.Try rubbing the area with half a lemon, it will take most of it off.
The only place I had corrosion on mine is where the cowling sits on the motor, rubbing through the paint over time. Some lanoguard grease fixed this.
    cheers....Shawn.

I wouldn't be telling the dealer if I was putting cleaning chemicals on the new donk.
The operators manual should be adhered to.
Just some detergent and a good hose off.
My Yammie gets some white looking stuff on the leg as well, caused I would think from the high temps within the exhaust chamber reacting with the salt in the water.
Japanese service manual will probably say; natural and unavoidable phenomina, if this is the case.
On my motor it is definetly on top of the paint and not bubbling underneath it, so it is not corrosion of the parent metal in my case.
If yours is the same I would not be to worried but a reputable dealer in Honda's will give you an honest answer if you are still worried. I think that Northside Marine in Brisbane is a Honda Dealer.
    cheers Kev.

Straight from the horses mouth,Brisbane boat show Honda reps.My only enquiery was where I might gain some touchup paint to hide the fact that I'm still findindinding my Moreton Bay legs. Must of had a shampoo, shave and a shower that morning as the rep without provication gave me the recipe to beautify my near new Honda , 8)(the bees knees)
Not in writing but he suggested Septoon Fibreglass restorer dialuted to 10% as to remove the salt like oxidized like residue if your concerned.

I've got the exact same thing on my Honda 50.

I tried washing it off with detergent etc but no go.

Shane...let us know how you go with the Septone.

    cheers

    Hey Guys,

My 130 Honda gets the white stuff caked on too.

Septone drifter Gelcoat restorer diluted to %10 as stated before does the trick.
