Yamaha ceto 115 BATTERY CHARGING RATE

I HAVE THE 115 ON MY PLATE TINNY AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD,,THE ALTERNATOR ONLY GIVES A TRICKLE CHARGE IN THIS MODEL?? BUT MY BATTERIES ARE DYINGOF OLD AGE ,AND I HAD TO JUMPER START IT TODAY COS THERE WASNT QUIET ENOUGH CHARGE LEFT. BUT IT WOULD NOT REV OUT .UNTIL I RECCONECTED THE SPARE BAT..IS THE CHARGING SYSTEM SO POOR THAT CAN NOT FEED ITS OWN IGNITION THE CHARGE INDICATOR SHOWS IT CHARGING OK , WHAT DO YALL THINK .??

Re: Yamaha ceto 115 BATTERY CHARGING RATE

Hi you were close to an electrical meltdown there, your motor charges your battery then the motor takes what it needs to run it's ignition, if your battery is dead flat and can not accept enough charge in real time then the motor cannot pull enough out in real time regardless of how many amps you have to charge with.

Most flat batterys have not enough charge to turn the starter motor but enough to run the ignition if the motor gets started somehow. luckily with your dead flat or open battery it seems like you got away this time without it causing a couple of hundred (or quite a few hundred) dollars damage, it happens easily if a person persists with the dud battery.

Unless in an emergency always run a good big battery for your motor at all times or you may literally pay the price.

Those new E-Tecs are supposed to run all day without a working battery or a battery at all, nice little safety idea that, ever taught yourself to pull start a big motor? just in case?, it's really no that hard under 200hp. cheers nq

Re: Yamaha ceto 115 BATTERY CHARGING RATE

i did a trial pull start on the 200 suzi,
    piece of cake.
so thats great if the starter kicks the bucket.
in the case of flat batteries i'm not so sure about it.
like the fuel system still needs to get pressurised by
the electric high pressure pump and the injectors need
good pwr available from the computer to drive them.
i doubt the charge coils can supply this during hand starting
though the magneto ignition system should work just fine.

guess i'll have to try it again with the batts switched off.
but running the thing with the batts off is normally a no no

bloody batteries are always a worry imho.

??? ??? So this engine can run without a battery connected ??? ???
    ROLL TIDE, ROLL.................

Re: Yamaha ceto 115 BATTERY CHARGING RATE

i think older carby equipped motors might be o/k without any battery volts.
their ignition systems may have no need for batteries. i think they have have a cdi
energising coil and a pulse coil to control the timing.

what i'm wondering is it possible to handstart an efi motor with zero batt volts.
i'm not so sure, and to simulate it maybe i'll turn the batts off, then try hand starting.

then again, the 'if it aint broken, don't fix' it rule might come into play.

Re: Yamaha ceto 115 BATTERY CHARGING RATE

Thats cool Aido, were you amazed I know I was when i started a 200 once, although an old 125 almost broke my arm with kickback, I also heard one story about the rope getting caught and trying to wipper snip all on board .

My EFI vehicle will not push start with a DEAD flat battery, on the surface I cannot see how an EFI o/b would be any different? It is really hard these days to keep it simple and cover all the different forms of motor.

I know that a person will blow the electrics quicksmart if run with no battery or even connecting positive and negative leads together, but i also know of a person that changed batterys while the O/B was running and did no harm. I have no idea about DFI or 4 stroke designs.

You seem to have some electrical knowledge (I remember your fuel guage posts) would you chance it? nq
