    Battery for my electric?

Just got a new electric motor Minn Kota Freshwater model. I know the deep cycle batteries are best for it but am I right in thinking they are around $400, seems a bit exy, is there any other options? If I charge my internal battery each time will it be alright or a bit crap? I have a 16ft Aluminium boat, it is a Transom mounted motor, does it work OK if I mount it on the side? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Go to 'Battery World' ,their shops are in most areas and you can buy a good quality battery for around $100 I have a 27ld. thrust Minn Kota freshwater model and Iuse an 85 amp hour battery just make sure you look after it e.g. keep it charged and check water levels. The battery has got to be deep cycle.-Beatle.

    Re: Battery for my electric?

    I researched into all this
    - yes the battery has to be deep cycle. You will destroy a car battery in a few weeks using it as a deep cycle.

Its just they are not meant to go down to zip and then up again regularly.

A good deep cycle will cost $400. The best ( arguably) are AGM - non spill you can lay them on their side.

A well respected angler I know has a source of 100ah used batteries from an electronics application ( UPS) and thus hardly used, though tested and he only keeps the best. These were avaialble for $50. I have one and just ordered a secod. PM me and I will send you his details.

Another source is used Golf Cart Batteries. Soem of these are 6 volt - so two in series will give you 12Volt. Soemtimes you can get these for free. And some have soem life left.

You will also need a BIG charger 8 amp RMS or so.

    Re: Battery for my electric?

I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED 109 AMP DEEP CYCLE BATTERIES FOR $150 NEW. THEY ARE LEAD ACID BATTIERIES BUT HAVE BEEN PROVIDING GOOD WORKING HOURS FOR 50LB MINN KOTA.
ANY HINTS ON A GOOD VALUE CHARGER WOULD BE APPRECIATED. HAVE COSTED THE BAINBRIDGE TECHNOLOGIES CHARGERS FOR 15AMP CHARGERS STARTING AT $450. THATS A BIT NASTY CONSIDERING I CANT USE IT TO CATCH FISH.

Hey Gary, where abouts are these batteries. I'm interested but may not be worth it with freight to cairns.
    Thanks, Mark.

    Re: Battery for my electric?

ok the cheap scates way to a half good deep cycle and charger

batteriy world ask for a 85amp dulathon deep cycle it is australian made and should last over a full day on the leciy
    price around $150
charger you can get a supercheap auto just get one with over a 10am/hour charge
    price around $100
they are not to top of the line of ether field but sure do the job very nicly and i know alot of the bloke they ether just starting out in a ABT or just a rec bream/bass spinner use this combo as they are not over priced and are very relabile and long lasting
you can use the normal car battirys but the main thing you will find apart from there short life is they will only do the job for 1/2 a day at the very top! and when you think about how much you can spend on a car battiry whats a extra $60 when it will last a full day and outlive a normal car batt 10 times over
