How to set up battery box

Is there anything to be aware of with setting up super battery box with a cigerette lighter to run a sounder, gps, light etc. I dont want to set it up so the motor charges the battery, i will just charge the battery when I get home. I see at once place you can buy a 12v-7amp/hour non-spillable sealed rechargable battery with a carry bag and output lead and charger with a cigerette lighter socket on fused lead or a super battery box that would take 11 plate battery with a cigerette socket to take accessories.
We have a 4.2 Stessco tinnie with a 30 hp pull start Yammie which we bought at the boat show just gone. We have had boats previous but not ones without electric start motor. Our goal is to have a basic fishing boat that takes the minimum amount of effort to launch, retrieve and clean. Hope I havent gone on too much. Tony ???

I must admit your question was not crystal clear.

The idea of just recharging the battery ashore is fine. You may find it easier to leave the battery in one place - and bring the charger to it. This means isolating everything else so that the battery is charged. There are plenty of chargers that will recharge a battery - then when it is full drop down to a trickle, so no danger of overcharging.

The larger battery you mention would be more than is necessary - but give you a comfortable margin. I would personally take that option.

As for the rest - you will need a main fuse and fuses for each item. There are marine switch panels available with built in fuses. Use tinned wire and materproof joiners and all will go well. get yourself a BIAS catalogue - they have it all in there try www.biasboating.com.au

Shortcut the process and cut corners on the fittings and you will be assures hours of later repairs and forever patching up.

Let me know if you have more questions

    Tony,
As Gary said about all the wiring fuses etc.
Attached is a photo of what I did for my switch pannel. I bought the standard switch panel and pulled all the switches and fuses off and drilled holes in the lid of a sealed electrical junction box and re inserted them. I put my 130AH battery up the front of the boat (better balanced than when it was up the back) and power to the panel along the flexible white conduit you can see (in line fuse up near the battery). Sealed grommets at the back of the box for power in and all power out.

Not shown in the photo, but I have since mounted fore and aft stainless steel cigarette lighters. Again I mounted the cigarette lighter in a 4 x 4inch electrical junction box and then mounted it to the wood sides just beside the switch box. I obviously use them as a lighter, but also plug my versa light (camp fluro) into the socket when I need a bit more light.

Hope this gives you some ideas. I fair bit of work, but that was half the fun. As Gary said, do it right first and not again soon.

    Cheers
    Jeff

Thanks for your advice. Can you set up the sounder with a male cigerette lighter plug and plug the sounder into the cigerette lighter socket in one of those super battery boxes or do you have to wire in a switch panel. Thanks Tony

    Tony,
Not to sure what you mean, sorry. Got a photo?

Don't think you really need the switch panel, but it helps to make sure it is isolated and you won't want power running over to an open ciggi socket without something in there. And its all pretty convenient with the fuses there as well. You should have an in-line fuse though, with or without the switch.

Re: How to set up battery box

    Tony,
    Make life easier for yourself.
Take another look at the switch panel, it comes already wired to the switch & fuse (each switch has a seperate fuse)you only have to connect a wire from the battery to the pannel. Then another wire from each switch to the appliance that you want.Looks better uncluttered,
& easier than lighter plugs. Sounders & lights work at the flick of a switch, a lot of boat stuff does not come with cigarette lighter fittings. Work out how many things you need to run, like lights sounder & radio and one or two cigarette lighter sockets & that is how many switches that you need (+ 1 or 2 spares). I bought a plastic box to fix the pannel to,which keeps all the wiring covered safely inside & makes it easier to mount, from either Dick Smith or Tandy & run the wire in spiral (conduit, see Dick Smith or Tandy).
    Hope this helps.

    P.S. BUY A SWITCH PANNEL

Forgot to tell you also that you can buy a plastic battery box from Super Cheap
or any car places, which have external terminals which would help you charge the battery without taking it out.It also has a cigatette lighter socket built into the case. From memory it retails around $60 - 80
Rember to switch the switches off when recharging.Another idea is to run the switch box fron the lighter socket.

Re: How to set up battery box

    Tony,

That 12v-7 amp/hour sealed battery really not big enough and your application, which is really more suited to using a deep cycle battery. There are larger sealed battery's but are quite expensive compared to conventional no maintainence deep cycle battery's.

Also those sealed type lead acid/gel type batteries require a special charger where as a deep cycle can handle the normal old charger.

    Cheers, Kerry.
