    Re: Navagation Lights

Heres the link to the online safety handbook for NSW.
    http://www.waterways.nsw.gov.au/sbh.html

If I remember rightly (haven't got time to check now) you need port and starboard lights and all round white (anchor) light when running. All round white only when anchored (so don't wire all three lights on the one switch like a mate of mine did). If you are drifting without motor running, you are considered to be underway and need all three on and must give way etc like you are underway.

As for the problem of the white getting in your eyes, all I could suggest is you extend it above head height and then put a flat circular shield around the bottom to shade your eyes.

    Cheers

    Re: Navagation Lights

having just got my first boat i checked up on the rules before hitting the water at night. that very first night i nearly hit a boat a anchor (not moored) in a channel with NO lights on at all.

this wasn't a one off for me seeing boats who don't know the rules for nav lights.

not trying to offend anyone here but it is a bit of a concern that some of us don't seem to know the rules.

it's one thing for you not to hit anyone but it's another to help other people to avoid you.

Something funny ive seen is a lot of yachts using those solar garden lights as an anchor light. Damn good idea till the reserve power runs out at 3 in the morning. Well in retrospect not all that funny, more so dangerous.

if in doubt put them on i would rather see a boat with lights on than no lights. make sense to me and am sure the authorities won't yell at you for having too may lights on

    Re: Navagation Lights

I am going to get a stern light as I dont have one, apart from that, when I am under way at night I will turn the all round anchor light off and still run with port, starboard, stern and cabin light which is like a chrismas tree
    cheers
