    Keel Guard

Does anyone use a "Keel Guard" (ie to protect keel from concrete ramps etc) on their fibre glass boat? If so, are they useful and would you recommend fitting one? That being the case does anyone know where one can be purchased and what price?

I've done a Google search but found none in Aus only US.

We had it on one of our older rescue vessels - 7.0 metre GRP mono - and it was an absolute disaster! The product got a very bad name in its early days due it continually coming off. And believe you me, there is nothing harder in this world than trying to stick hard nylon stripping back to the keel from an upside down position. Many retailers went very cold on the product due the above problem, but maybe now they have fixed it?

    Re: Keel Guard

I have a keel guard on the front section of my frasercraft and it is peeling off from the keel rollers. I will attempt to restick with sickaflex on the weekend but after that if it comes off.....

Sounds like adhesion is a problem. The blurb on the US website states the 3m adhesive now used is supposed to be the ducks nuts. Maybe not.
    Thanks everyone for the info.

    Re: Keel Guard

    Morlers ,
I fitted a Keel Guard to my 195 Allison about 6 Months ago .
Sundown Marine got it in for me . I was somthing like
    $ 120 .00 & is 2 meters long .

I originaly saw a Keel Guard on Bill Cortons original boat Reel Affair . Like the otherposts I had heard some people had problem with them comming off .

I made sure that I installed it exactly as recommended in the manufacturer's recommendations , even bought a special product to clean the Fiberglass with .
I wasn't sure on where to start it from , I ended on starting it just under the Stainless D shackle for the winch rope , this way most of the time it would be out of the water while underway .
After fixing a few chips in the Gel Coat of my brand new boat , I thought it would be worth a try in fitting one . It did have the 3 M product to stick it on with .
After fitting with a number of trips with speeds over 30 knts & others bashing into some absolutly Sh#ty conditions ( So far so good ).
    Regards

    Re: Keel Guard

    Hi there Ebs ,
I'm absolutely wrapped in my Allison 195 Angler , the ride is great compaired to my old 575 Quintrex Searaider Cuddy Cab .
No worries travelling at 20 / 22 knots in the usual 3/4 / 1 Mtr Bay chop.
She is fitted with a 150 HPDI Fuel Injected Yamaha and peaks out at 35 Knots .
A few of the things that one me over to the Allison were :-
    *200Ltr underfloor fuel tank .
*Fully Fiberglass floor & Stringers , no timber under the floor other than the strengthening in the Transom .
    * Good Value for money , up to $ 10,000 cheaper than similar size Signature's or Cruse Craft's .
If you would like any other info send me a PM .
    Regards
    Peter

    Re: Keel Guard

I tell ya what if it comes off after being put on with sikaflex then i'll be very suprised. It took me 3 days of cutting, heating, scrubbing and buffing to get the stuff off my car doors from some moulding.
