I have a CHRYSLER 25hp about 1978
when i start it... it does not spit out water to well but when you give it a little the water ran's good(onland)and does the same in water ...so should I look at changing my impeller or could it be something else.
Hi some o/b pumps are pressure pumps and some are volume pumps, a motor of your age it is probably an volume pump so it should not push a large contrast of water between idle and a sensible rev out of gear. Is this a large change from usual and you just noticed it? Usually an on the way out pump will work better on the hose than idling in the water. Next time you have her out run it in gear at idle speed for a couple of km and feel the engine head/block, outboards dont run real hot and you should be able to keep your hand on it anywhere for a couple of seconds before gritting your teeth bad and pulling it away if you cannot then change the pump as soon as possible. You could just change the pump anyway if you dont know the history of the engine.
Many pumps run only in the water and in clean water last 10years, contrary to popular belief but as sonn as any doubt exists it usually time for a new one if just for the piece of mind. nq
