Yamaha 20CV

Lookin for advise,
Am endeavouring to fit an electric starter to my Yammie cv 20.Have all bits out of an older model.Need to know how to wire up .Have 2 spare wires out from under magneto.Starter has a box with 4 wires hangin out.Any ideas please as i dont want to stuff anything.Thanx.

would reckon thetwo wires under magneto would be for the rectifyer for charging battery, I think it would be best if you got a w/shop manual, see them on ebay at a good price sometimes, may be worth the money in the long term

Owned a Yamie 30 CV & enquired about a starter motor about a year ago from a dealer. I Got the 'should have got it origially' or about $1500-00 to fit. Needless to say I gave it the wide berth & was content to stick to manual starting. Should be someone to help, good luck.

The manual idea is the best idea but if you have any electrical experience this info may get you there the longer way.

Your motor will run any time it's rpm is high enough to generate electricity and has a fuel supply, so you can think of the charging/starting or ignition circuits as idependent of each other. You need to wire up the switch to the solenoid (small poles) and the solenoid to the starter motor and the battery (large poles) the -ve battery cable should go straight to the engine block earth. This can all be done on the bench with no part actually contacting the engine. Once you have the starter engaging go ahead and bolt it all on and be sure you also connect the kill wire to the switch as well so that it will shut down (or have a remote shut down switch in the mean time).
Does your engine have a charging coil and regulator/rectifier already fitted ie could you charge a battery right now? if yes then you only need the above ignition circuit if no then you will need to also look at the charge coil reg/rec. Once your engine is turned over fast enough it powers itself so the battery need only be used to start it (ie leave the charging circuit to stage two), that may help you get it to that stage then the next stage is adding the coil/reg/rec so that it will charge. Sorry I cannot be more specific but I do not know your motor but they are all the same in principle.

But really if you have not been up to your elbows in vehicle or other ignition systems at some level get some hands on help so you do not fry one of your new parts or original parts. good luck.

lots of usefull info.Got the starter wired correctly now.
Only not sure on charging circuit.have 2 green wires coming from the magneto connected them to rectifier.red wire on rectifier ,fused and connected to battery via switch.black wire on rectifier onto earth. Does that sound right????
