the 14 ft tinny that i have owned for about a year now looks real average. the paint is peeling off and looks crap.
today i took the motor, windscreen, steering etc off and started to sand it back.
any ideas on what kind of paint (powder coat, 2 pack etc) to use. i live at strathpine nth brisbane, any idea who could paint it for me and what it might cost to paint inside and out.
also looking for some acrylic to replace the crap in the windscreen.

i did a mates for him not to long ago....stripped the outside with paint stripper,,,he wanted it black so to hide a few dents i painted it in a 60% gloss 2-pack,,the inside we used colour fleck,,looked pretty damn good when all done.....if you paint it yourself and use 2-pack i'd highly recomend a spray booth and proper ppe gear....

It's not as hard as you would think to do the painting yourself. You can get a cheap little compressor and an average spraygun from supercheap or the like. Surface preperation is the main area of effort. Don't go too thick and keep the gun moving. Mixing 2-pac is not that hard. The best thing about it all is if you stuff up a section you can sand it back and have another go. Get a good quality paint like Jotun and the paint will look good ie: it covers mistakes well . I'm no expert but can say this. You will be amazed at what you can acheive if you put your mind to it. Get a quote, compare the costs. The hard work is the preperation which you will probably do yourself anyway.
yeh i once heard about using plain old house enamel? anyone used this or seen it done? it's got to be a lot cheaper and not as bad on the health as 2 pac

Go the 2 pac mate!! . Don't waste all that hard work prepping the boat . House paint is for houses and stuff you don't really care about and spraying enamel is soft as butter. Should be able to get an etch primer for aluminium to suit the 2 pac.

gday kingfisher, mate if you want a proffessional finish then leave it to a pro. Otherwise being a spray painter by trade i can tell you preperation and using good materials is everything.Firstly your flaking paint will need to be either stripped off or you may be able to sand it back with an orbital sander,use an etch primer over any bare metal prior to spraying making sure the surface has been thoroughly cleaned with a degreaser or turps,I would then apply a couple of coats of either a 2pack primer or hi fill over the entire area to be painted,give it a light sand prior to painting,I would only recommend a good 2pack MARINE paint be used as it is far superior to automotive paint in salt water and more scratch resistant, it's tough stuff! you'll need a spray booth or you can use a clean garage but the weather will have to be warm to help with drying times.A coloured fleck will look good inside as someone suggested but it is not solvent resistant, A coat of low sheen 2pack clear will rectify this.It's a fair bit of work but it'll keep you busy for a while!Good luck. regards stiffrod!
Cooky the paint will probably set you back $250 or a bit more for the alloy stuff. Spray gun, compressor.... that will depend on you. The paint suppliers will give you the run down on prep etc, just ask them. Labour is the major expense. But as said if you want a professional job get a pro to do it. My 2c is this though, complacent spraypainters are not as thourough as some of us novices. We know that when our mates askus who did it and we tell them yours truley, then they will pick the shit out of it. I had a mate up here who paid $3500 to get his boat painted in the one colour. The end result was not worth the effort. Have a go and you will be suprised what you can acheive. T.I.J.M.H.O.

My bro-inlaw is a builder and has borrowed a friends compressor, etc to bead blast and paint his (doing up a 26ft plate alloy). I guess I could always ask.
Otherwise his wife's bro (stay with me) is a spray painter by trade and no longer works in the trade, but maintains a shed with all the gear for cashies on the weekends. He does cars, but I could always ask him (don't know him that well, but always worth a try being sort of family).
I guess I just wanted to know how much the paint cost as I'm looking at a 5.8m Sportfish and it needs paint badly.
