What's this bit on my router do?

I just bought a router to use on the boat project for 30 bucks at a place with warehouse in it's name, good quality especially for the price - a bargain, but I dont know what this part does:

They call it a "chuck cutting tool"
    Anyone help!
    Thanks nq

    Hi NQ,
I would guess that it is used for routing in a circle and the point would be located in a centre point mark.

    Cheers,
    Mick

Yeh sorry - of course its scales

Reminds me of the old joke about the bloke who went to see the psychiatrist who was showing him Rorsach ink- blot pictures. Every pic reminded bloke of wild uninhibited sex

Finally the quack was so frustrated with this same answer - he told bloke he was really sick and was hideously preoccupied with things sexual

Bloke replied... me? sick? man its you who is showing all the dirty pictures

being a fitter and turner by trade even though this is a woodworking tool i fiquire it is used to follow a profile to create a pattern in the timber by just keeping the point on the picture of what you wish to cut into the timber ( maybe i'm wrong but that would be my guess )

    NQ

Quite simple really, is For allowing you to cut circles

The point goes to the center of the circle you want and just go around.

One would have thought that these things would have been explained when you bought the router, (whhops, sorry forgot where you got it, expecting a bit much)
    Cheers

Thats the attachment on the side of the tool that you blame for not working properly when you make a Fxxk up.

he he, I knew it wasn't me! First time with any router today just to get the feel for the it on a scrap piece.
Lesson number one you DONT push the router with the direction of the blade rotation because it will completly take over the job at 28000 RPM while makeing extremely loud noises as it slips and grabs munching and bucking down the side of the wood until reigned in
Will take that piece off tomorrow

I told you that bit on the side wouldn't work properly.
