    Re: New Boat Licence

    Hi guys,
My information is that, as of 1st July 05 you will have to do an accredited course over a few days with an accredited provider the cost will rise substantially around $500. A big problem will be for commercial licenses because you will need access to a comercially registered vessel so you can complete a minimum of 50 hours operating time, so its back to "Not what you know, but WHO you know." However the biggest catch for the Government will be the revenue raised from the very hefty fines issued to offenders. There are / will be 5 regulatory bodies who are able to issue infringement notices. For example, if you are caught drink driving you will loose your RMDL as well as your standard vechile license. Nothing is in concrete yet and not a lot of info is available from the Government yet. I may have incorrect info but I do believe my source would know what he is on about. Unfortunatley I think we just have to wait and see.

    Cheers
    Big unit.

You're saying that I'll need a $500 licence to run around in a 10' tinnie? No way

Hey freefish if you have an existing license you have nothing to be concerned.

thought you lost all licences now if caught drink driving, and serves you bloody right too

Bungie I agree whole heartedly, my point is that somethings wont change.

    Re: New Boat Licence

Hey I have had all my licences for years & don't drink so can't lose them that way. Agree if you're mug enough to drink drive you deserve to lose them.

No problems with T.A.F.E. course & testing as some tests these days are a joke but the cost?

What about new boat owners going for first licence? $500 to be able to use a boat, any boat. Reckon the market for boats will take a great dive.

    Re: New Boat Licence

When I was told my reaction was " thievin buggers " and the guy who told me says he wont have any choice but to increase the price. Same guy only charged me $50 to do the course, compared to the fella at Noosa who quoted me $175 and an hour to complete, for the same thing. So at that rate a course that takes a few days at $500 is cheap if you work out the Noosa instructors current hourly rate. The boat market just might slow down a while. On the other hand, I still think that if someone doesnt buy a boat because of a $500 license then they problably werent that keen to start with. My experience is that nothing to do with boats is cheap.

That clears that up. Read original reply to be $500 to government for licence. No way. $500 to properly accredited trainer not so bad. What's the set up for us blokes out in the bush who can't easily access any sort of training?

bit rough. While I might not agree with Drink driving at all, I think that comparing drink driving in a boat to a car is ridiculous IMO (depending on circumstances).

Much more difficult to kill or seriously injure someone else in a boat than a car. Less boats on the road too = less potential for accident. In a boat you're endangering yourself and crew moreso.

If you had a few beers around say Palm Island relaxing and you slipped above 0.05% I don;t think it's right to cancel your car licence.

    Freefish

The part that bugs me is you need to do a course based upon navigation and safety at sea just so you can put your 12ft tinny into the river where you will never see, let alone need to understand, what all the bouys are about. Just how many cardinal markers are there in Leslie dam?
There should be 2 distinct licences 1 marine, and 1 freshwater(ie where there are no navigational aids)
In the meantime I'll stick to my 6hp.

    Re: New Boat Licence

It is like the MROCP test, you dont NEED to do a course, but you must pass the test and prove yourself competant!!!
You can learn all the things required many ways, VMR's, Coastguards, RCP, boating schools, books or of your mate while out fishing.

When you sit the practical you must display proficiency on more than one occassion. (With a school and a day long course I would assume you take the helm on more than one occassion and successfully complete the task on more than one occassion).

If you have the skills a licenced tester MAY take you out in the Sat morning, and then again on the Sun morning to prove multiple instances of proficiency, this may take the form of half an hour to an hour at a time, over both days... I would imagine in this case you might get away with $100-00 all up... depends on the tester, your knowledge and preparedness and of course your skill level....

Lets face it, their are a lot of people out their who shouldnt have their boat licences and invariably also display a total lack of nounce on the land in their Motor Vehicles as well.

At the end of the day, it has gone from one extreme to the other, once it was rediculously easy, now it is a little to difficult and in my opinion will deter people from getting a licence at all.

You will find a link on our website in the drop down news section at the top taking you to the Boatsafe page with the full details.

If somebody is happy to slip above .05 in a boat, why should the courts believe that person wouldn't do the same in a car. The driver has the responsibility of the lives of the people in the vehicle and around him, car, boat, plane, tandem bicycle. And once he has left Palm Island over .05, he goes back to the ramp, loads up the boat, and drives his car off home ...... still over the limit.

Seem to remember about 15 years back a bloke in Paddington getting booked for DUI whilst on roller skates, wearing a pink tutu

    Re: New Boat Licence

Ok guess i better get myself a licence ... while they are cheap...any suggestions for the Gold Coast?

Also make sure you have that bit of paper receipt (licence) the Qld government gives u.. if you go over the state line.. IE Tweed Heads...if you cant produce it you will be fined as the Qld government charges the NSW police or fish patrol blokes a fee to check that you have a licence.. guess thats governments working together to better Australia.
