    hey scarey botany bay

hey every 1 . just a little scary story to tell. i was out fishing bot 3 weeks ago in boatany bay . pulled up to my fav spot off towra point. fished for a while there and the wind was up quite a bit any way we set of trying to cross the bay. huge mistake half way across i noticed that the wind picked up more and in my 15 foot pointer i was sitting on the back of a small swell until i noticed that the sweel behined me was getting closer . i was left with no choice but to jump over the 1 in front of me and get the hell out of there . well what a ride once i jumper over it and made the dangerous job of turning my boat around i had to head back but i could only hit them face on which meant i had to head towards the hot water out let. the swell was so huge i had the front of my boat dipping into the swell and had the bilge pump on pumpin out water full boar and at 1 stage there i had waves hitting the front and smashing over the windscreen. now does any 1 have any advice for me if i get caught out in that situation again >>>

Best advice......WATCH THE WEATHER and don't go out if it is starting to get a bit blowy.......
Is a fish really worth your life ??

Waht would your family prefer.....The fish....or...YOU

May the winds blow lightly upon your sails
May the seas buffet gently upon your hull
May your chiller be full of piscatorial delights

Botany Bay is quite shallow and will develope a nasty chop with winds over 20 knots. Stick to the lee side of the bay. There are plenty of launching sites both sides of the bay. So if strong northeasters are forecast launch on the northern side of the bay and don't stray to far towards the southern side. Similarly if strong southerlies are forecast launch in the Georges River. Even in a strong wind if you are a few hundred yards from a lee shore it will be as calm as a mill pond compared to out in the middle of the bay. Of course you still have to keep an eye on the wind while you are out there.

    ok thanks for that..
its amazing how much there is to learn and how much you learn each time you take ur boat out. i now most of the time either put it in a picnic point boat shed or the ramp at oatley. for example i was out with my father last monday . in the water by 5am hopeing to go out side as my father has been a keen boater for a while . we head across the bay and go and suss out wat its like outside. NOWAY . it looked pretty dam bad out there . there was a couple of big boats poke there heads out but come back straight away.

brzook - If the bay is too bad, you always have the option of travelling 15 minutes and launching into Port Hacking. There's plenty of good fishing in there, and its pretty sheltered. Some really good bream spots right up near Audley (You can follow the river up).

Up around Mainbar, you can pump yabbies at low tide off the sand bank, and use them as bait. Some BIG flatties around that bank and they love fresh yabbies! Also try to catch yourself some live squid, and use them fresh. Some very nice jewies can be caught in there, as well as the occasional Kingie.

Not wrong there. The Hacking has been going off big time for a couple weeks now with good catches of frigates and salmon.

That's good to hear Gunna. Haven't fished there for a while now, but grew up fishing there. So many stories that start with "Back when I used to fish there we'd catch....."
