Leaking oil

Hi Fellas
I have an 1975 Evinrude 135hp. I have noticed that substantial amount of oil is leaking from the bottom of the rhs hydraulic cylinder and is worse when I operate the motor up and down a few times. I thought it might of been leaking out the top and running down but it isn't, it seems to be leaking somewhere around the pin that goes through the cylinder at the bottom. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'm not useless either, can I have a go at this and if so are parts available as in gaskets or seals anymore. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

you need some special tools for that Job.

As you see it remove the top bolt after you have supported the engine
Undo the cap which houses the seal that is leaking (right hand thread.. speacial tool makes it easy)
remove piston assy from the unit

hold eye end in vice (if ya lucky the piston is held on by a nut other wise the piston is screwed straight to the rod.. if so drill two holes half way into the piston on the under side..Like the cap you removed earlier..using special tool again remove piston)

once piston is removed..remove cap where leaking seal is..flick out old seal, then install new seal.

Re assemble in reverse order.

once assembled trim engine to highest point and check oil level (may take several time to ensure no air left in system

Just looking at the pic it looks like the top is unscrewed out of the cyc, if it is thats where your oil leak is

Fairly sure you can get all the bit's and pieces you will need from one of the hydraulic houses like enzed you may have to ring around until you find someone interested enough to chase the bits up. You could also buy from the US, someone like sierra could have a kit, I am sure they are out there as aftermarket parts. cheers nq

PS if you pull it apart consider some pics along the way I for one would be interested in learning how it happens, I have one to do in the next little while myself, last time I touched one was over 10 years ago and cannot remember jack about it!

Blaze it does look like the top is unscrewed but it is on nice and tight,thanks for your input.
nqcairns I'll try those places you suggested and see how I go. What a great idea to take some shots as I go, exactly what is needed for a mug like myself. When I have tackled this I will let you know and send you the picks if that helps. Thanks heaps nqcairns.
