Thread: shrinking side curtains

    shrinking side curtains

Went to put on the clears and side curtains yesterday morning and had to really struggle, got the missus to help and even then we only just got them on. I spent several hours a couple of months back trimming the aluminium bows to make everything fit again. Any tricks out there on getting the damn things to fit in cold weather. Is there a material for side curtains that doesn't shrink, the stuff that is used seems to have a huge expansion/contraction range.

Mine too are a bit tight but are easier to put on if left in the sun for a while to warm up.

Sounds like you might not have had them on for a while?

The sun trick works but not when trying to put them on early in the morning before the sun comes up.

Mantaray, are you saying they shrink if left off for any length of time.

I store them rolled up, maybe if I left inside the house where it is warmer they might not shrink.

My Dad used to have the same problem, mainly early winter mornings. So he then poured warm, to nearly hot water on them. This softened them up enough to give enough stretch so they could be clipped on.

I've wondered whether once washed they should be hung up in the shade to dry - I stick mine on the washing line, maybe it's like wet leather, shrinks in the sun.

Just realised I used to keep the old home brew in the laundry near the hot water system as the temp was always warmer there. Think I will keep them there the night before to solve that problem. Might have to throw out the wifes gear and make myself a special shelf.

They do shrink about 5% a year so a few trimmer have told me.

How about taking a 12V hairdryer to the boat ramp with you or hit them up at home with a 240 one to stretch them. That is what some mates of mine did with their cat. Eventually they had to get new ones made. If getting new ones done get them oversize a bit to allow for this shrinkage in coming years.
