    Mariner 15hp wont start

My mate has a 98 2 stroke which has developed a problem with starting. It had been a very reliable engine and after laying dorment for only 2 months now will not start.

When it first happened he primed the fuel bulb and fuel came pi##ing out of the Carby hence he pulled it apart and re-assembled and now seems to be fine.

He has done the following so far, new fuel, new plugs, pulled carby apart and cleaned.

He has tested to make sure that he is getting a spark and it is OK. Fuel is getting to the Carby as fuel bowl is full.

    Where should he look next?

    Hi Robbo
Firstly, maybe a badly reassemble carbie(what were the gaskets like)
Are the plugs wet with fuel after trying to start indicating that fuel is indeed getting to the cyclinder
What are the seals like on the crank main bearings
Is the fuel pump operating (maybe a split in the diaphram)
IMO the carbie would be first port of call
    cheers

small and silly i know but has the kill switch been truned to run and does it need a safty lanyard
if the switch or lanyard aren't on you can pull all you want but it woun't start

there is alot of things that could be wrong. Why don't you get a mechanic to check it out?

What Blaze said [smiley=2thumbsup.gif], try after pulling a few times then pull a plug and see if elctrodes are wet. If dry use a spray bottle of premix and shoot through the carb while pullstarting it should kick even start for a second if the carbs and starvation are the problem.
If the plugs are wet consider major flooding. think like blaze says you will find the problem inthe carbs or in the kill circuit somewhere like Bassermans says,
    Good luck FNQ

Ps did he get the carb/throttle to timing linkages correct on refiting the carb?

Gday Robbo, dunno if it's the same guy, but I know a guy who fishes like crazy up in townsville, goes by the name of Robbo, half decent bloke, anyway take it easy best of luck with the engine, cheers, Ray, from AMB.

Thanks fellas, he has checked the kill switch position. He will check the plugs again to see if they are getting moist after pull starting a bit. He says that he has tried spraying "start you bastard" in the carby then giving it a few pulls. I will pass all these suggestions on.

Seems to me there is more to this motor not starting than he has told you. Probably the worst thing you could do is spray a starter fluid in the engine. 2 stroke moters are fairly basic, if they have fuel and spark they will run, maybe not good, but they will run. If the spark is there make sure it is sparking at the right time. If it has fuel in the carbs and it is not getting to the crankcase the odds are you have faulty seals. Some times a little mechanical Knowledge maybe a dangerous thing and it ends up cheaper taking it to a good technician. I am a mechanic of over 30 years and still discuss things with my local marine technician and even pay him to do things for me (he mostly tells me to bugger off and not be lazy and do it myself). I think your mate needs to tread carefully as there is no fix in a can
    cheers
