    Hooker Fitout

Just picked up my new Hooker 5m Side Console yesterday and would like some ideas and sugestions for the fitout. I am planning to fish both in the creeks and reefs off Townsville, weather permitting. I would like to hear from anyone experienced in Furuno, Raymarine and JRC sounders. I would also like some feedback on chart plotter and VHF radio choices.

    Regards /me

    Hi Dicko1980.

I wanted to PM you this message as it is not about electronics ... but I can't yet as I don't have the number of posts up to 10 yet.

I can't help you with your electronics choice yet as I am still to research that. I was wondering what size motor you have and how you rate it for the Hooker. I have a 5m Hooker which I am converting to a center console and I am trying to decide on an outboard.

    I'm also in Townsville.

    Re: Hooker Fitout

Haven't fitted a motor yet, tossing up whether to fit a 70-75HP or a late model 90HP from a mate. A mate at work has the 6m Centre Console, with a 70HP 2stroke, and says he tops out just under 30 knots. I bought the boat direct from Hooker in Cairns, and it was already fitted up with a 60HP two stroke. The boat had apparently been ordered, but the buyer could not finalise payment, so I bought the boat and trailer. Salemans said that 60HP was fine, but you could use the extra power of a +70HP when fully loaded. If going for a four stroke, he recommended going for the max HP, as they struggle to deliver the equivilant HP of a two stroke in the same power class.

Thanks Dicko1980 ... I'm leaning towards Merc 75 or Tohatsu 70. B&M seem to know what they are doing (tohatsu), I get a good impression when talking to them. I haven't had a good run with the Yamaha mob in Tvl, the thought of trying getting service from them when something goes wrong makes me very uneasy. It sucks because I do rate the yamaha outboards. Haven't tried out of town yet, I've been told Hunts in Tully are quite good.

    Good luck.

Im sure you would be happy with Hunts if your looking for a Yamy. Bought my 200hp 4 stroke off them, great guys to deal with.

Thanks Ron. I will give hunts a call.

In an attempt to get back to dicko1980's thread after I hijacked it ...

Dicko1980, have you made your mind up on colour of greyscale electronics. Once you have done that then it is a little easier.

I think picking a motor is much easier then electronics.
