    Wot wrong with my motor!!!!

Well me and my dad tried to take the boat out this morning. The motor didnt start after many pulls and a couple of very sore arms. It has been hard to start for a while now but it usually does start after a while. We've bought new spark plugs (cleaned them this morning), put less oil in the fuel mix and bough a new fuel line end but still nothing. It was only last used three weeks ago. I think it might need a service it's an old 9.9hp Johnson seahorse, dont know exact year but i presume mid 80's. Just wondering if anybody on the site might have had the same experience and been able to fix the problem. Never know if i never ask.

    thanks jono

    Process of elimination mate.

What i would do is take the plugs out then see if you have spark first...
If you dont could be the coils?
If you do then it will or could be a fuel problem,is the bulb hard ? as in after you prime it.

Dunno mate, Spaniard_ king, gary would be the one too talk too about this but if you haven't got fuel or spark you have to eliminate mate.

    mate.
bit hard diagnizing by braille, but heres a couple of things to try.
Make sure isolator switch is in correct place.(Little piece of red plastic in kill switch.usually attached to springy plastic cord.
Is there any sparke?? Test by removing plug, leaving attached to wire, earth to motor and pull starter.. Should be a strong blue spark. If no spark try another plug.Last resort stick screwdriver in lead and hold near earth(1mm gap)and pull . should get decent kick.if nothing its starting to get serious.go to boat mechanic
Is there fuel at carby..Remove drainplug from carby..Look for water or dirt in what comes out.Let it run onto a clean rag)
Open throttle squirt a little fuel into its throat and pull .If Engine fires then stops it is probably something in main jet..Get someone to clean carby.
If nothin else works probably need to get someone to look at it for ya
    Hope this is some help

    Hey Jono,

Try the plugs but I used to own one of these motors and they were very reliable. The only problem that I ever had was a problem just like yours, and the answer, the fuel is pumped into the carby by a vaccumn pump on the side of the motor. It can be identified by a nerled nut in the centre of a plastic part which has petrol hoses connected to it. The plastic part will either be cracked and sucking air or the diaghram will be torn in under the plastic part. Be careful not to overtighten the plastic bit as they DO crack from being to tight.

I beleive that the parts are still available and if johnson dont have them try evinrude the parts are the same.

    Best of luck,

Re: Wot wrong with my motor!!!!

    Johno,

Had plenty to do with your type of engine. Most of the hard starting is due to malfunction of the choke butterfly and the incorrect mixture setting.

This type of engine is very tempremental(ooohh spelling ) when it comes to mixture settings.

Do you use choke to start??

my method for these is... full choke and throttle till engine fires..then no choke and full throttle (plz note full throttle in neutral is limited so as much as you can get)

When engine is warm only use full throttle

If the engine will not start within 4 pulls.. it most likely needs a carby clean.

    cheers
