blaze's weary, boat nearly finished
well its been one hell of a task but the work on the boat is very near to completed. inside the boat all that is left is the seatbases need to be completed and glassed in, a bracket glassed in to mount the trim tab control unit on, then a final flowcoat applied to the deck.
I am towing it to CH marine today to have the top deck/cabin all fared in and paint, you may ask why I am not doing this. well like I said, i am plain bloody weary and sick of the sight of it and want my shed space back.
will post a few more pics next week as i am off to melboune for 4 days (more favours, moving bloody furniture for my niece)

Was only thinking yesterday how you were going with the boat and was going to send you a pm, but you've saved me doing it.
Hang in there mate, it's nearly there by the sound of it. I'm sure it'll be absolutely spot on by the time you've finished it.

hey blaze, I have a 1982 model hull and like you have found some cracks in the hull running into the groove of the planing strakes on the starboard side. Im not sure if the cracks extend all the way into the hull or whether it is just the gel coat finish which has cracked. Either way if the boat needs fixing, do I remove the top deck of the hull and do a ground up rebuild or just remove and replace the floor and front deck. If I could I would buy a new hull but the cost associated with a new hull and trailer is just too much. What sort of price did you find to do the repair and refit of your boat.

It would probably depend on if you have a full cabin bulkhead, I would at all times leave the top deck on if possible as it forms a lot of the strenth/stablization of the hull when you gut it (all about triangulation, but it will still twist over the hull lenth if not careful). I had mine supported on the trailer every where I could. My full cab bulkhead had a mass of serius cracks through it and had to come out, so what I was left with was a bare hull with all internals removed with the cab and top deck and transom intact.
Some things I have learnt this time around are
Q-Cell the best thickener for resin and flowcoat to make fillers.
Klegcell closecell foam (replaces ply) needs to be precoated with resin with no cataslst(hardner)
Laminating ply. The new theory in laminating ply is to precoat with resin with hardner but a mix that takes 24 hrs to go off as this allows it to penertrate the ply better.
A lot of boats I have looked under the floor on lately have very few bulkheads, shows up with poor trailers in the form of stress fractures in the gelcoat. Have seen a few that have ply floors (most boats) that have not had any glass or sealer on the underside of the ply (so if the hull sweats inside the ply start to rot from inside), I have layed a 600gm mat under all my undersides and flowcoated all subdeck.

when I get it finished I will put a photographic story on the same place yours is, never thought I would pay someone else to do what I can do (and just as bloody good too) but she was delivered out to the local boat shop today to get all the top deck fared in and painted (all ready having second thoughts about it cause they knocked off at 5.00pm, already told them theres 30hrs in the average day), heres hoping its not a mistake

and just to add to the above, its a credit to any north of tassies that takes on a do it yourself job cause the roof on my shed is low and I have been working very close to it, it got to 58 degrees the other day, not a breath of wind, (what temp do ya bake a turkey) but any to put up and work in that heat would take me for ever too and heaps more $ for the refreshments

Blaze, that was a quick rebuild, you must of been at it every day. Looking forward to the pics.
NQ hadnt heard much about your rebuilt, thought you had it finished and in the water

Bugger 58deg Blaze your resin would set as fast as superglue! If you were working for gov they would have sent you home on full pay long before 58!

NQ, news is mixed, yes it has been in the water several times and does what it does best. Had a couple of "teething" problems. Carbies on the new 4 sts were full of crap, something about me not storing them properly......
The roller on trailer punched a hole in one of the sponsons ( different length made the trailer setup totally wrong), travelled 60nm that day and didn't know until I got home, at least the separate compartments work.
Unfortunately jeffo and several others were witness to the last teething problem. cracked one hull ( 300mm) while travelling from mool to noosa. It was carrying a fair bit of water by the time I got to noosa ( again thanks to the separate compartments, I didnt notice) The only part that I did not reinforce was the bottom of the hull both sides under the false fuel tank floor. The crack has something to do with the rest odd the boat being rigid, that part flexes. I gave up and sent it to a boat builder to lift the boat and give both sides the treatment, back within a week.
