Re: mercury v yamaha 2 stroke

I had a 2001 90hp Yamaha on my cuddy cab and twin 2002 90hp Mercs on my Cat. Since then I have sold both boats but had no problems with either motors. Personally, I like Yamahas and would go that way every time given the choice. Maybe it was the colour, grey VS black, but the Yammie seemed to show less signs of corrosion.

thanks and cheers for the new year ian

I would say both motors are good and you should base your purchase on the service you expect to receive from the dealer (if $$ is not a major concern). A lot of people will say they had problems with Merc and a lot of people say they have had problems with Yammy. Others will comment that they have never had problems. I have seen boats being towed behind the coast guard having Yammy's and I'm sure boats with Mercs have been in the same predicament.

Other considerations that may effect your decision are weight and fuel consumption. You should be able to find data on that.

I personally went with the Merc but that had nothing to do with the quality of the motor or it's specifications.

    My opinion only.

    Hope this helps.
